Day 015 - The importance of goal setting

Establish a short term and long term goal for yourself        Training via ActiveMail

Setting goals is a key part to successful training. I would now like to ask you to set two goals, a short one and a long one. It gives purpose to your training and gives you a finish line to reach towards

In the Ten Steps to heart zone training, setting your training goals is the third step as follows:

1. Choosing your Maximum Heart Rate

2. Setting your Heart Zones

3. Choosing Your Training Goals

4. Determining Your Current Fitness Level

5. Determining How Much Time is Available

6. Putting your Time in Zones

7. Writing a Training Plan

8. Executing the Plan

9. Monitoring the Plan (Heartware/Log)

10. Re-measurement

It sounds simple to say, "set your goals" but I know that it takes time and thought to set them. We tend to chose goals and not discover them. As a framework for making those choices, start by making sure that your goals meet the following spec.'s: they are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely.

Next, write them down. Determine what its going to take to accomplish them--what are your resources, support systems do you need to have in place? What tools, learning, time, and other resources are you going to need to invest in to be successful. Go get them.

Now, finish this assignment by writing down at least one short term (within the next 3 months) and one long-term goal (within the next 12 months) that you would like to accomplish.
