Description: A great form of “useable” strength training, bouldering is rock climbing without going up. With some rock climbing shoes, a boulder, and a partner, you can practice moving horizontally along the rock, all the while developing strength and coordination.
Equipment needed: Rock-climbing shoes and helmet.

Bouldering is like trying to solve a puzzle along the face of a rock. You move horizontally along the rock, only a few feet off the ground, as your partner spots you, figuring out what move to make next. Granted, not everyone has a convenient place to boulder nearby, but if you do, or if you have access to a climbing gym, spend your lunch hour discovering the challenge this non-technical form of rock climbing can offer.

You’ll need climbing shoes, a helmet, and a guide or experienced partner to do this type of workout. Most good outdoor retail shops can rent you the gear and steer you in the right direction for guidance and places to go.

Start easy, picking a boulder that you can move horizontally across without a lot of difficulty. As you progress, pick challenging sections that require good hand strength, foot positions and use of your legs. Learn to use your body position to minimize the amount of energy it takes to stay on the rock. Gradually you’ll be able to move with grace and skill and have strength and coordination that will benefit your other activities.
