There is somewhat of a trend around fixies and people claiming that single-speed or fixed-speed bikes are better, but apart from the fact that they don't freeze or break, I completely disagree.Gears allow you to use your bike in a much more efficient way. They are essential in my opinion.

They can be. If you live somewhere where it's flat, it doesn't matter. But if you live somewhere where there are hills, switching to a higher gear makes it easier to peddle uphill. But of course, you won't be going that fast in a higher gear.

If you llive somewhere flat it most certainly does matter. I and most everyone else use mutiple gears on flat terrain. Simple common sense. Multi gear bikes are better.

"better" is always a matter of context and preference. But a bicycle with multiple gears, even if it's just a two-speed kickback brake shift, is definitely adaptable to more situations.

When you hit that hill, or when starting out on a hill, you'll appreciate gears. And if you're older, not extremely fit and want to save your knees from injury, you'll like those gears even more. But for those who can deal with the limitations, a singlespeed can be a beautifully simple, easily-maintained machine.
