I recently bought a bike and I'm wanting to lose a few pounds/tone up. For how long and how many times a week should I cycle? I ride it everyday but it's only for about 5 or 10 minutes going to class =)

Ah, someone who wants to lose weight without the pill. I like that, I'll help you.One of the most important things about cardiovascular exercise, is that you're burning fat -- and not just using up your body's energy stores and getting tired and stopping. That much is obvious right? Of course. But its leading up to something. For the first 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise all you're doing is using your body's energy stores; its not until after the first 30 minutes that you start to burn fat.You see, to burn fat for energy, you have to break it down - and that takes energy. Plus your body stores fat for a reason, it likes keeping its energy reservoire incase of crises. So your body isn't going to resort to burning your precious fat and muscle until all the free energy is used up. So any cardiovascular exercise shorter than 30 minutes isn't going to do anything for you, but after the first 30 minutes you're going to burn fat like no tomorrow. 1 hour is a good time to do cardio for.Make sure you eat 6 meals a day, small meals, that will keep your metabolism high. As long as you're constantly eating food, your body won't need to store food (as fat) between meals. Of course, no one has time to make 6 meals a day. Atleast I don't, but there are some REALLY easy ways. For example, buy a bag of almonds (I use VendingNut.com) and put them in your car. Snack on them when you get hungry, you'll burn fat - get some protien - and the nuts will keep you full and keep you from being tempted by fast food giants like McDonalds and Burger King. (Did I mention not to eat fastfood?)That should be more than enough to get you started, good luck with your exercise! Taking the iniative step is the hardest part.

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day8 glasses of waterhave complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energyhave lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs musclecardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight trainingdont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)
