I just wanted a general opinion on this because its really annoying me.Recently i've been looking through the diet and fitness section just out of curiosity and i am absolutely shocked at what i saw. Hundreds of questions from children as young as ELEVEN, who are frantically worring about what weight they are and claiming to be on diet and announcing their weight loss. When i was eleven i would have sleepovers, play with barbies, cycle my bike.I certainly didnt care if i was five pounds overweight. These kids dont even realise that by the time they are 18, their bodies will probably look totally differant!Where do these kids get this crap?Im from Ireland, we're not as obsessed with our weight as alot of other countries are.Is it an American thing?Im 19, 5"3 and weigh about 135. And thats just fine for me.I understand that people will worry about weight and diet-thats just human nature. But for it to become such a craze-its too dangerous!!I feel so lucky that i was able to be a kid without ever worrying about my weight. Dont get me wrong, i somewhat struggled with an eating disorder when i was 15/16, but i now realise that it is such a waste of energy.Maybe thats why i feel the need to scream every time i see a 12yr old who weighs 100lb asking if they are overweight!?These kids should be healthy-Not anorexic or obese.I am finding it increasingly hard to live in a world where weight and apperance is such a big issue.I

I also think it is terrible, and it has to be said... it's generally young American kids. Although saying that, walking round Liverpool City Centre of a weekend, I see tons of young girls around 13-15 who are obviously exactly the same. I think it all comes down to the media, and also bullying must play a major part also.

I live in Korea and I am a middle school teacher. All the students at the all girl school I work at are totally obsessed!!! Its very sad especially since most are underweight already!I didn't worry about my weight until college but since sadly I have been way too preoccupied with it. I try so hard to steer the girls I teach into feeling positive and knowing they are not their weight- they are so much more. Worrying about your weight can take control of your life. I haven't seen magazines with 11 year olds but its all over this Yahoo answers thing. I personally think magazines shouldn't print things like that from 11 year olds. It only makes girls think its normal and it shouldn't be.

yes it is an american thing. americans are the most overweight country in thw world. and the media draws a lot of attention from our children. supermodels are 5'10'' and weight 115 pounds. something wrong with that picture? that should be the weight of someoen that is 5'0'. it is the media that distorts the minds of the young children despite the fact that many supermodel have died from eating disorders

Its America and beauty being stereotyped. If you're thin, you're perfect in America. People like you better and are quicker to get to know you. I'm American, 5'2'' and 143. Its NOT good enough for me, especially at 16 years old. In America, there is pressure on (mostly) women but also men to be a stick. Its sad and you're not crazy for noticing.

Its just a new thing, you kno something for people on t.v, the news everything, its like a craze for the t.v and news, they make money from these shows, showing people how to loose weight. I have never had any weight problems and the amount of programmes and news coverage, weight gets is unbelieveable. I think its all to do with money.

If you look into it America is the fattest nation out there. and I am an American. but our culture allows so much junk to be put into our bodies it is crazy and I see so many kids out in there eating nothing but junk, it is a serious problem here. But you are right if they were out being kids and playing instead of just sitting in front of the TV or computer they probably would be healtheir and happier. I work hard to keep my size 8 shape and I encourage my kids to eat healthy food they are all in good shape and happy with thier appearance.

It is America, I live here and they are constantly having discussion with parents about their children being overweight, they even have a weekly show where someone comes in on an overweight family and shows these 8 yr old what they're going to look like as an adult through computer animation. We are the worst country for junk food, Kids sit in front of the TV every day playing video games and don't go outside for any exercise, all the while, they are eating junk food in front of that TV. It's a warning to all parents that they are putting their children at risk for heart disease if they don't start doing something now for their children.

I tend to agree it is an obsession in America. The thinner and prettier you are the better chances you have of getting anywhere in life is what we as a country show our children and that is very sad. What we need to focus on is self esteem mind body and soul there is just to much negativity in our country. Prejudice plays a big role in adults here. Makes you wonder who is the adult and who is the child. We can learn a lot from children as you can put little children to play together and they do they play they are not worried about weight color etc. And I feel that is what we need to focus on HUMANITY!
