I've been a runner in the past, in fact this past Jan. I ran a full and a half marathon in 1 weekend. I ran a ten miler about 3 weeks ago. Lately I've been real busy and have limited my running to maybe 10 miles per week.Well now I' starting marathon training for a run in October and I decided that I need to lose about 20 lbs in that time frame. I weigh 190 and should be at 170. So I bought a heart rate monitor and read all the instructions. I'm a male 29 years old and i pretty fit condition. My heart rate should be between 125 and 165 for optimal fat burning and 100% rate should be about 190. When I ran 3 miles yesterday my heart rate said I was @ around 195 average with pikes up to 205. I felt winded but not anything unusual for the run.Am I working to hard? or is the national average not working for me.right now I want to burn off fat not increase my speed, what should I do?I do have a cheap heart rate monitor, and I just went off wwhat the instructions say my HR should be, I just measured myself while sitting at my desk and my resting HR is about 66- 72 BPM

There are a few factors that could contribute to your high heart rate.1) It could be from how hot it is getting outside, assuming your are running outdoors.2) Those monitors aren't always right, lol.3) To get your heart rate in a manual way, try to find your pulse in your brachial, arterial, or temporal artery. Place two fingers over the area to feel for a pulse and then count while watching your clock go to 30 seconds, then multiply that by 2.4) An average resting heart beat should be between 60-100, so honestly the fact that you're trying to push your heart beat up to 190 is a little dangerous...make sure you drink lots of water.I would go to a doctor if I were you, or even a nutritionist...it might be useful and try to be safe while doing this. I read that you can burn off fat after 15 minutes of continous activity so try to keep a steady running rate for at least a half hour. Hope all works out for you Smile!

did you buy one of the cheap heart rate monitors? or one that is tested to be more reliable like Polar? How did you determine your heart rate?? Were you resting before you took it to get a more reliable rate?
