| I was a competitive swimmer my whole life and have been doing cardio and weights since I was 12. Now I'm 20, and have basically been doing cardio 5 days a week and weights 2 or 3 days. My problem is that I feel like I look more bulky than I'd like. My arms aren't very feminine anymore thanks to all those years of swimming. Would yoga or pilates in the place of weight training help me slim down? Will the muscle I have from weight training just turn to flab if I stop lifting weights?I always thought yoga didn't really work your muscles enough to produce much change. Is that true? I've done it a couple times and didn't feel much benefit from it, so I wasn't sure... |

| Maybe you should balance them. Like one day weights and then another Pilates? |

| Perhaps using lighter weights would be one way.Or, using weights for less of the time that you exercise.Pilates are excellent exercises, & some of them are such that a rubber strap can be used (w/ varying resistances) for strength training. It is very important to exercise & stretch the entire body, which Pilates is designed to do. (There are other exercises that you could alternate with either the weights or Pilates, as well... I get tired of doing the same thing all the time, & prefer 'mixing it up'.) |

| Yoga is very good at lengthening your muscles so they look less bulky. It uses your own body weight as resistance, so you'll still be working your muscles and it is not likely they'll turn to flab. Pilates is very good for core strength but not as effective on the stretching. I think what you want is yoga in this case.Shop around until you find a teacher and a style you like, then replace 2 of your weight sessions with yoga. I think you'll like. For the variety if nothing else. |
