| I’m 10mo postpartum and started having irregular periods when my son was 6mo old. I started charting right when my cycle returned. My temps are lower than average (96.8-97); my NFP teacher told me that might be b/c I'm breastfeeding. My cycle started regulating 3-4 months ago. Each cycle since then has been about 28-29 days with a short luteal phase of 7-8 days. During my last cycle, based on my temps and cervical mucous, my body appeared to gear up for ovulation, but I never had a full thermal shift. A few days later my body geared up for ovulation again but I didn’t see any fertile-looking mucous. My period was 10 days late and started as brown spotting instead of red blood. It then got more normal and was a regular period. On my current cycle, around CD17, which is when I have been seeing the thermal shift begin, I saw a lot of very stretchy mucous. On CD18 my temp was up, on CD19 it was down, and on CD20 it spiked up again.Today, 2-3 days later, after no thermal shift, I think I’m starting my period again. Last time I went to the bathroom I saw dark brown spotting. It is almost like blood-tinged mucous rather than blood; it appears to be very thick and mucous-like. What in the world is going on?!? Am I ovulating at all? Did I completely skip the luteal phase this cycle? |

| wow, you are paranoid! calm down! if you follow your cycle that closely, and things are off, call your doctor, and ask to be seen. You may have a small infection that is throwing off your temp btw. |

First of all, I think it's really rude for the other answerer to tell you to calm down. I think your questions are very valid. The time after the return to fertility is very confusing, frankly. And since you baby is still young and is still probably breastfeeding frequently, it is going to take time for your body to return to normal. The short luteal phase is very common after the return to fertility. They should lengthen over time. Good nutrition is key here, as well as trying your best to take care of yourself with adequate sleep and exercise. Normally I would see cycles straighten out again by the 3-4th postpartum cycle. Since it sounds like you are not seeing improvement, you might think about consulting the Marilyn Shannon book: "Fertility, Cycles & Nutrition" to see if some vitamin supplements might help make things more clear.Without seeing your full charts, it is difficult to advise you on what is happening. Last cycle when you had what seemed to be a gear up towards ovulation, but then backed down again - did you have any illness or stress around that time? Was your baby nursing more often those days? Sometimes I see women have crazy cycles when their babies decide to nurse more often than normal. For this cycle, if you have had a dry-up since day 17 and the day 19 temperature is the only odd low one of the bunch, then I would disregard the day 19 temperature, just ignore it, and see if you have a thermal shift. Sometimes you can get one odd temperature for whatever reason, maybe it was a little colder in your bedroom that day or whatever. The best advice I can give you is to stay in contact with your NFP teacher and give him/her your complete charts so the teacher can see the full picture and can answer your questions. It's hard to interpret everything without being able to see the charts first hand, but from what I am hearing, things sound about normal for postpartum cycles. I know that is frustrating, but things **will** get better, have patience! Take good care of yourself and that should help.Best of luck to you! |
