You know how when you are on the ellipitacal machine and you are suppose to put your hands on the heart monitor handles........Well my heart rate always goes beyond the "fat burning" rate into the high cardio, is that bad for fat burning? If I try to keep myself in the "fat burning" range I'm gong way to slow on the machine. I'm trying to burn fat (like everyone)

I have this problem too. My heart rate sometimes goes up almost to 190. I used to try to keep it lower, in the weight loss range, but it was hard to do. I finally gave up on it, and obviously I burn way more calories when I go faster. I figure the reason it goes up so high so fast is because I'm out of shape and the only way I'm going to improve is by pushing myself.Curious to see what others say, though. Good question.

Are you sure the machine isn't messed up?The best way to know that you are in YOUR target zone is this: you should be able to carry on a conversation, with some labored breathing. But if you're gasping and wheezing for air, you're working too far beyond your range. If you can sing a song easily, then you're working way below your target zone. You should always go by your breathing rather than the machine's heart monitor.

If it is above the fat burning rate, that is good. Anything above fat burning means that you are doing more work. High cardio is what you are supposed to do to lose weight anyway, so anything above the fat burning is good!Don't worry. I think everyone that does the elliptical and cares about losing weight will find their heart rate in the high cardio rate (I do!).

I dont think that being in the cardio range is going to make you lose any less then being in the weight loss range. All I use at the gym is the elliptical and im always in the cardio range. Im the same with you at being in the weight loss range i feel like im hardly moving! I lost 16 pounds between november and march from the efx machine, and it was always in the cardio range! So good luck!!

Going faster is much more important than staying in the fat burning zone and here's why:The "fat burning" zone on an elliptical is a lower heart rate because you do burn a higher percentage of fat (versus carbs, etc...) than you do at a higher heart rate, BUT you will still burn more calories overall from working out harder. See an explanation and example at: http://weighttraining.about.com/od/fatlossweighttraining/a/fat_burn.ht m
