I like the philosophy of barefoot running / going barefoot, but I don't want to step in nasty stuff on my walk to work etc. I recently heard that there's a shoe called Vivo Barefoot that's as close to barefoot as you can get while still wearing shoes. Are there any other brands?Which shoes would you recommend?

Nike Frees are my personal choice. I cross-trained in them for a few months, and noticed that my feet became much stronger, my posture improved, and I was able to run longer, faster in normal shoes. And you can design your own!

Nike Free & Masai Barefoot Technology mimic the motions of the bare foot, but they're definitely a 'shoe' in that they have a thicker sole and all. If you're looking for a minimalist shoe that just has a thin sole, you can indeed try Vivo Barefoot, or there's the Zinetic pocketslipper at http://www.pocketslippers.com Another thing you might try is toezies, a sort of sock without toes that has anti-slip soles and should also be a bit tougher than regular socks: http://www.mytoezies.com/default.asp?PID=2 And what about moccasins? A lot of them are made with stiff, even rubber or plastic soles, but real mocs without any insoles are very flexible too. Try the Tandy Leather ones you put together yourself and don't put the thick insole in.Hope one of these works for you!
