I am thinking of selling my car and riding my motorcycle everywhere I go (unless it snows/ice, where I'll then take public transportation). I already know I'll need cold weather gear and rain gear, but I'm trying to find creative ways to lock my gear (helmet, jacket, back pack) to my cycle if I ever need to go shopping or to a movie or whatever. I know locks are a good option but I was hoping some of you could share some of your ideas. So, how do you secure your gear to your motorcycle?

saddle bags, hard or soft that is your preference. There are alot of makes and models out there the two i prefer are saddleman, and T-bags both give alot of room with the option of locking up your gear and still keep your bike looking cool which after all isn't that what we are all lookin for.

Lockable top-box or panniers if you insist. Depends on what bike.Best to not leave gear with the bike unless you really have to though. I've seen people run a chain through their helmet and chain it to the frame, but I'd not be happy leaving several hundred £s worth of helmet there where it can be knocked, scraped, or have the visor stolen.

Your only option would be saddle bags or a box, putting these things on is up to you, sacrificing style with convenience. I don't think you will be covered if any of your valuables get stolen because on most policy's they wont cover you if you left your stuff behind. You will have to ask with your insurance provider. The problem with external/exposed securing is that if it gets damaged you will not be able to get home until you replace them. That would be costly and may be the wrong time of day to purchase any of the damaged/stolen items. Other option could be that you leave your stuff at a train/bus station locker and pick it up when you are finished.

A bike with saddle bags is good, hard bags on BMW will hold your helmet so you don't have to carry it everywhere. Bungy cords, and nylon straps available at most bike shops and back packing outlets work well, but you can't beat hard bags for security.
