| I ask because I have recently gone from doing normal stationary bike cycling, to changing the resistance and my speed regularly and I am sweating a lot more, and seem to find it a hell of a lot harder...but why? I mean, considering some is done at a slower speed, surely it should be easier? |

| The idea of intervals is you work hardr for a shorter period of time. You burn less calories while you train but more over all because hard workouts like this stimulate your metabolism for up to 2 days posst training. It is called EPOC. |

| Is interval training better really depends on what you're trying to accomplish. Are you training for something? Are you trying to lose weight or simply get faster on the bike? Are you racing your buddies on weekend rides? Interval training is definitely going to be harder, especially if you haven't done any in the past. Your heart, lungs, and legs will have to work harder as you go 'anaerobic'. Your muscles may have no problem riding a stationary bike for hours on end, but throw in some intervals and watch out! I can ride my mountain bike for hours on end at a moderate pace, but put me in race where everyone is sprinting (basically doing intervals) and I may find myself falling off the back. All in all though, intervals WILL make you faster on the bike. Recent research is beginning to even indicate that more frequent interval training is actually better than longer (and slower) distance training for racers. |
