|
|
| Hi,Im in the process of buying my first bike, and was wondering if you could give me some advice on what to look for? I will Probably buy on ebay, although I would be happy if you could suggest alternatives? I have no knowledge in what to look for in a bike, and thats where I was hoping you could all come in?Im planning a couple of cycling holidays this summer, so am looking for a cheap enough bike (preferably under £200) to get me started. A second-hand bike will probably suffice. Ideally Im looking for a touring bike, that will be fairly light, but can hold a couple of bags on the back. Im 6'2", with 34" legs, so what sort of frame would I need to buy? Also, what sort of tires, gears and handle-bars would I need? Is there anything else I need to look out for? |

| hi, I'd firstly advise you go speak to the fellas in your local bike shop (LBS), they should be able to advise you on the size of frame required for your build, as a guide tho I'm 6'4" and i generally ride a large framed bike, however the sizing's of frames vary from manufacturer to manufacturer e.g a large in one make would fit you, but it may be a XL with another brand.Either way, LBS can also advise as to what type of bike would be suitable for the riding you want to pursue, take there advice and remember you don't have 2 buy off them, you could just take some advice, but if you bought off them then they would probably treat you as a "preferred" customer when it came to servicing etc, i.e quicker turn around.Off the Internet how ever I'd say you should try some of the larger bike dealers websites, e.g. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ or http://www.evanscycles.com/ see what there offering on there (may be a bit pricey) but then look on eBay etc for the same bikes. As with all Internet transactions however there is a certain amount of risk.In summary, try your LBS (can be found in yellow pages), and simply tell them you budget to see what they can sort you out with...Good luck!! |

| you are asking for trouble. i say this because you say you dont know what you are looking for. i think buying online is fine if you know bikes. the problem with a novice like you is you dont even know what size to buy, let alone what to look for.that said, i would guess you would ride a 60cm, as a rough starting point. i am 6'2" w/ 34" inseem, and a 60cm works best for me, but there is usually some forgiveness there. i currently ride a 58cm, but this particular bike was designed to classic road geometry. it has a longer wheelbase and top tube length than more modern bikes, so the small size works. see this is the other problem, one bike can call itself a 60cm and be completely different than a 60cm of another brand, and that makes it hard just to mail order a size without knowing that brand and how its made.in that price range, you wont have much choice. i would say focus on fit, look for that 60cm bike first and get the best one you can for the money you have. |

| If that's your first bike, then I would suggests buying from a shop, or testing the bike first. The problem about buying one online is that you don't know much about your sizing and can't take any comparisons between your current bike and a prospect. |

| Unless you know exactly what bike you wanted and have been fit for a particular size, I wouldn't recommend buying a bike online. |
