After I started taking birth control pills I gained at least 20 pounds. I go to the gym regularly and have watched my diet for months, still no results. My boyfriend has ben taking a medicine for migranes called Topamax which causes a loss in appetite and weight loss and some doctors prescribe it for patients who have trouble losing weight like me. He said if I want to he would give some to me but I am a little weary. He told me I would have to check with my doc. first but I lost my health insurance plan. I'm not allergic to any medications so basicly my question is, is it that bad of an idea to start taking this medicine?Yes I know the age old expression. "You shouldn't take someone elses prescription." And I specified I have been going to the gym for months and dieting but it's not working for me. I don't even cheat I am very strict about it. But thanks for the answers and I will not take it now. Instead I'm going to pay a little extra money and visit the doc about this.Yes I know the age old expression. Yes it's a really bad idea to start taking someone else's prescription, particularly something like topamax, and please don't listen to anyone online or anywhere else that tells you differently! Ack!

yes, it would be a bad idea. It could have some bad side affects and also, some drugs interfere with the effectiveness of the pill so watch out for that. A doctor would know what you can take with the pill.

Yes, it is a bad idea for you to take this medication. Thiso medication before being used to treat migraines was used for people with seizures and was primarily prescribed by a neurologist, after ruling out things like brain tumors etc. Do you really want to take something like this? Why not just exercise and try and do it on your own. Also, prescription doses vary by a persons weight etc. How do you know that his prescription would be safe for you?

Yes it is a really bad idea for many reasons. I'm going to skip the reason number one which is you shouldn't take someone else's prescription, as you have probably heard. The weight loss that he experiences is a side effect. It is not granted that you will get the same side effect. Just like the weight gain you experience is a side effect. Not everyone gains weight on birth control, not everyone loses weight on Topamax. Don't mess with your body chemistry without having any clue of what you're doing. You have no idea what Topamax is going to do to you besides possible weigh loss, right? Insead, find your health plan, see your doctor and explain that your current prescription cause you weight gain and you want it to be changed.

Topamax is a seizure medication, also called an anticonvulsant. It affects chemicals in the brain that help to reduce seizure activity.Topamax is also used to prevent migraine headaches. http://www.drugs.com/topamax.htmlThis is a drug that alters chemicals in your brain...and of course comes with its own list of side effects.....You should NEVER take a prescription medication that was given to someone else....it is not wise and could have very dangerous consequences.
