My aunt told me to do 50 push-ups and sit-ups every morning and night to get stronger. I was wondering if it would better to do this or to do a longer more inclusive workout only several times a week. I heard that you get stronger when you rest. I already swim about 5 times a week on a YMCA swim team and do calisthenic workouts 1-2 times a week.

Typically it is best to work out in the afternoon. That is the healthiest time for your back. This is due to the fact that your back takes time to warm up and become fully functional. If you do a good stretch routine, it's fne to work out whenever you want but most people don't stretch properly.I'd say to do a stretch routine and power yoga in the morning and then sit-up/push-up routine at night. Throwing in some crunches would be good too. They isolate different muscles than sit-ups/push-ups.

What are calisthenics?you are right about rest and a more inclusive workout. The workout that you describe would build alot of muscle mass and put weight (i.e. muscle) on you. The workout that your aunt describes would tone you up and make you a little stronger but very lean. You are describing a strength routine. Your aunt is describing an endurance routine. You gotta decide your goal. If you are involved in athletics it will probably be both.
