| I am a teen and I weigh 142 pounds. I have gained weight in the past couple years, mostley my gut (when I sit down my belly hangs over my belt and I just feel really uncomfortable in my own skin!). I have been eating just Special K for breakfast and lunch (the special K challenge). Does running really help lose your gut? I'm most conscious about my stomach in a bathing suit. So I want to look good in my bikini. Any suggestions on how I can lose my gut and be toned for summer? What work out moves work the best? What food do I need to cut out? Thank You! |

| You're going to have to do a combination of things in order to achieve optimum results in toning your body. You should eat many small portions of healthy food throughout the day. You really don't need to cut out any snacks; just eat them in moderation. Get 8-10 hours of sleep every night. Drink water frequently. I recommend eliminating soda from your diet completely. Most importantly, you must exercise. You'll need to combine cardio and strength exercises. Try running, biking, and swimming for cardio exercise. Try various types of ab exercises as well; you can find examples online. Make sure to constantly switch up your workout routine to really challenge your body. Don't count calories or weigh yourself daily; these are unhealthy habits. Be patient and ambitious, and you should see results fairly soon:) |

| SOME people find that running helps, but it really depends on your individual style of movement.(If you habitually 'hyperextend' your back, then running won't help. Learning to lose this habit can 'magically' improve your abdomen, because the way you stand will make your belly more prominent, or less. A PILATES exercise called the 'pelvic tilt' will 'engage' your belly muscles more, and allow them to train during everyday activities like standing, sitting and climbing stairs.)There aren't any 'magic' foods that will change your figure. You are what you eat, but you are SHAPED by what you DO.If running motivates you to be more active, then do it (try NOT to do too much, too soon). But exercises are SPECIFIC. Running will improve your legs; your belly will only benefit from belly exercises. AVOID situps and crunches. These are TOO specific, and concentrate too much of the work on a small, superficial layer of muscles at the front of your body. You need to do activities that TWIST your waist and WIGGLE your hips. Long-distance Skating, Salsa dancing, Bellydance, Capoeira, Swimming crawl style, and walking like Mae West, all activate the deeper muscle layers that will 'pinch' your waist in, compress your innerds, and tighten your belly. As well as improving the look of your midriff, this extra compression can improve your digestion, help you to breathe more effectively, and keep your spine supported so that you're less likely to suffer from lower back pain later on. |
