| While I am doing my workouts, I wear a heart rate monitor and I noticed that when I burp, my heart rate goes down about 10 bpm. Is there an explanation for this? I always thought that burping was good for you, I just need a good excuse to rationalize this socially unacceptable behavior! |

| Hello steve,It's considered normal to pass gas in one form or another up to 20 times per day or thereabouts. In particular, it is normal to belch 3-4 times after a meal and is usually caused by swallowing air while you eat. Hope this helps! | Heart rate is based on the number of contractions of the ventricles (the lower chambers of the heart). An increase in the heart rate means there is an increase in the contractions of the ventricles and vice versa. One way of decreasing the heart rate is through the Valsalva maneuver, in which you try to breathe with your nose and mouth closed. Burping produces the same effect as the said maneuver. It impedes the return of blood to the heart which would lessen the contraction and eventually the heart rate goes down. |
