I bought a bike from Halfords last week. The Carrera Virtuoso 07 model. I love the bike but there are some problems with it. 1. The chain comes off frequently. I have cycled 40 or so miles on it and it has come off at least 7 times.2. The chain scrapes off the front deraileur (probably normal but this is my first new bike so I'm not so sure)3. The chain jumps in its lowest gear when you're going up a hill. (the chain is well lubricated and I have checked it hasn't ceased on)4. The cable for the gear has become frayed (not a problem as such because it doesn't affect the gear shift but it's an annoyance when it scratches my leg)Those are the problems and I have no idea what's wrong with it. I've been very careful with the bike and have only had it one week. There shouldn't be so many problems with it should there? I'm going to take it back but I need some information so I can complain to Halfords with some confidence. Thanks in advance. The gear comes off after I wheel it backwards out my workplace, when I stop at junctions and when I'm cycling along a flat piece of road (don't ask me why)Incidentally, should this wear and tear have happened after one week and 45.1 miles

TBH, apart from the chain falling off, the rest is normal wear from cable stretch after use. Buy some cable end caps for that frayed cable. As for the gears slipping, get someone to hold the rear wheel up for you. Put it in the lowest gear and turn the pedals and *slowly* , turn the cable adjuster anti-clockwise gradually until it stops trying to jump off the largest rear sprocket onto the next smallest (which is what I'm assuming it's doing)As for the front derailleur, there are 2 screws on it, depending on which side of the derailleur cage the chain is scraping on, you need to adjust one of these. Can you expand a bit more on how the chain falls off? Where on the drive chain? When shifting?

The chain is probably too loose. I know how to fix this on a bmx but for your bike, just go into halfords and they will do it for you.The chain scraping is probably the same as above. The chain jumping into lowest gear might be a new idea, when your going up a hill, your supposed to use lowest gear, i think it's a new design to help your riding. For the last one, halford might fix it or buy a matal piece for the end (use the internet) or, what i would so, tape it up!Hope i have helped.. basically go into halfords. They won't take it back but they will fix it, just tell them what's in your question!

Absolutely what is wrong with your bike is that the derailleurs have not been set up correctly. All the symptoms that you describe can be fixed by the proper location of the set screws and the proper tensioning of the cables. Take it to a real bike shop and ask them to have a look at your derailleurs. They will probably charge you $30 or so to get it all running smoothly. Good luck. ps - i could describe all the various things that you need to do to set it up properly but that would take pages and pages and you would probably get very frustrated trying to do it. And those nice folks at the bike shop will be able to take care of it for you so quickly ... maybe even while you wait!good luck!
