i am 16 years old, 6'1 and about 180 lbs, im not "fat" but i would like to lose some weight, and i have been lifting weights for a while now and would also like to keep that up. i was recently told by one of my friends that my plan of running (to lose weight) and keep lifting weights and working out wouldn't work well and that with running you lose muscle as well as fat. any ideas on how to do both? is it possible?

Its possible but challenging. You have to carefully plan both your workouts and your diet. (Don't forget to include some cardio)

It gets complicated. But in general, you can tighten up and look more muscular with the program you are on.

you should try HIIT (high intensity interval training) it allows you to do cardio but in relatively shorter amounts of time and makes it possible for you to maintain muscle while losing fat.

by working out, you lose weight, and gain muscle. muscle doesnt really weigh more than fat

running? lose muscle? i don't think so.lifting builds your muscle, even if you just use dumbbells.running will get you to lose weight if you do it often, and it will definetely get you in shape.. your lower legs would be getting stronger, toocrunches or situps are also good.. they work [= i do maybe 200 [crunches] spread out along the course of a day

its possible, but you have to be patient. You must make sure your getting all the nutrients your body needs without overeating or eating crappy stuff. This way your body will burn fat and not resort to other things your body needs, for energy. what you said you'd do activity wise sounds good to me, and yes its possible, just remember you will have to change your workouts after certain periods of time because you will reach points where you don't see the number on the scale smaller.

well. if you mean loose weight in body fat then what you are doing will do it. if you just want to loose weight in general then you will need to transfer your workouts to a higher rep lighter weight so that your strength training muscles (fast twitch) will decrease.my advice is just to keep strength training. do HIIT instead of cardio to burn off fat. and make sure to eat enough to supply your body with adequate nutrients to continue building muscle and giving you energy to perform your exercises to the fullest.you will gain weight in muscle but you will be decreasing your body fat anyway. honestly i would rather be 200lbs at 5'11" with 9% bodyfat than 165lbs at 5'11" with 16% body fat (about what i am now.)

Your friend is a twit. You can tell him I said that.Don't they teach anything in schools these days, any physical activity is good for you, and as long as your actually working out (feeling it) your getting your muscles stronger.

Yes of course you can. When you working your fat is used to feed the muscles. I found more at http://online-gym.com

ok listen.... when you do high intensity cardio you burn muscle when you reach a certain heart rate..... thats why you never see jacked marathon runners...... Im 6'1 215lbs and round 8% body fat..... just eat good and your cardio should consist of 20min a day on a incline 15 at 4mph...... thats all you need... dont go nuts on the cardio bc you will lose size and strength.. belive me i've done it

To increase muscle mass and lose fat to some extent are contradictory goals. However, I suggest you look into the ZigZag diet, it was designed to deal with the contradiction. Here is a link to a guy with a Ph.D in Exercise Science and a past champion power lifter. Super sensible and helpful guy. http://drsquat.com/articles/zigzag.htmlalso, http://drsquat.com/home/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=99Li fting weights will help you lose weight. Most medical websites will confirm that point.Sprints don't cause any problem with strength development. If you run in a way that is highly fatiguing to the leg muscles that will limit the strength development in the legs. To a power lifter that is a problem, but for you, I think it is just a bit of a trade-off.Look at the summary research near the bottom of this web page. It doesn't discuss running specifically, but addresses endurance training. http://drsquat.com/articles/powerliftingandspeed.htmlIf you search drsquat.com or post on their forum, the guys there will give you more guidence on how much running you can do before it is a problem.
