I love working out, and my body responds really well, but I used to be a gymnast, and my dad was a boxer, so my muscles tend to get really huge and bulky. Yoga seems to make me bulky as well. I'm trying to lose weight, tone and lengthen, should I do pilates instead?

You won't know till you try. Your body's response to yoga seems kind of unusual. I've done yoga a long time, and I don't know anyone else who is bulked up from it, so who knows what Pilates will do for you? Try it and see.

I've tried both and by far I've liked Pilates so much more! Yoga is very relaxing and I'm sure that once you become advanced it works on getting you into shape, but Pilates you can feel like away and see the results too!Maybe you should try both - tone up with pilates instantly, and work toward becoming good at yoga over time!Good Luck!

As someone who has taken both, I would think that Pilates would be more likely to bulk someone up than Yoga... I have never known anyone who had that response to Yoga so.. I would guess that Pilates would probably have the same effect with you though. You should definitely give it a shot though, you can't know until you try it, and you can always stop and try something else....

I would really recommend Pilates in your case. The Pilates exercise technique slims the muscles, making them stronger but without developing bulky muscles. These exercises work the body from the inside out, beginning with the deeper, structural muscles. The main goal of Pilates is to produce an attention-free union of your body and your mind. With Pilates you learn how to use your body to its greatest advantage by counteracting your weaknesses, concentrating on your strengths and correcting you imbalances.Give it a try!
