Since I've gained some obvious weight from this pregnancy, my shin splints have gotten worse. I've always had a problem with them during vigorous walking, never a problem during running. But now that my doctor doesn't want me to run - walking is the next enjoyable (and safe) thing. Is the weight gain a factor in the pain? What can I do to ease the pain? Will they only get worse or will they get better if I just keep walking? Can I buy a certain shoe to help? Certain stretching? Longer warm up periods?Would ice help with the pain so that I can continue my routine?

I use to get really bad shin splints when I ran track in High School. Typically this is caused by overuse of the muscle in the shin area. Do you take big, over exaggerated strides when walking? This could be causing the issue, as this would promote a more forceful contraction of that muscle ( as easy as that sounds). This also may be the reason it doesn't happen when you run; may not be taking big strides. The only way to reduce the pain is to take it easy and ice the area, or anti inflammatory agents (not sure you want to do that while pregnant though).

I feel your pain. Those just plain suck. I got them in my left leg from running too much with bad shoes. The only thing that cured them was to stop running and let them heal. I had to swim instead. Built up my shoulders and use muscles that I didn't during my runs. I went back to running 6 months later and they were gone. My bad shoes did not help, so I got high quality ones. After a while, I discovered barefoot running and absolutely love it. Try www.barefootrick.com. Great site that might help as well. If you can never run again, you can always bike and swim.

Type into your search engine "what are shin splints?" and you can get a detailed explanation that will help you to understand them.I've never known anything that will cure these except to rest them. If you get them when you go for a walk, they will only get worse not better if you keep walking. You might want to try getting some padded shoes to walk in, and try to not walk on a hard surface. For instance, walk alongside the road not on the hard surface of the road.

Yes try to supplement your diet with more Calcium and magnesium and vitamin D also glucosamine sulphate & chondriotan do not take vitamin C at the same time you are taking the bone building vitamins and supplements take it at a differnt time make sure this is okay with your doctor for the baby and always try to get organic or from natural sources next low impact exercises another is to use the best ever insoles here is the link check it out I have used them for myself and family and friends " http://www.run-longer.com/insoles/insoles.html " make sure you have shoes or runners that have enough room for the insoles or remove the old insoles and put in the sorbothane in their place or just get bigger footware to accomdate your new insoles here is a little blurb about them but I personaly indorse it " Runners' and walkers' feet have two demands: stability and shock absorption. And when your feet don't get their demands met, you'll feel it in pain and fatigue. SorboElite is the first and only insole to satisfy both of these needs. Stability is achieved through proper alignment of the foot throughout the gait cycle. Superior shock absorption is provided only by Sorbothane insoles, because only Sorbothane absorbs up to 94.7% of impact shock. Finally your feet can enjoy the stabilizing stride-correcting benefits of an orthotic with the pain and injury reduction offered by the unrivaled shock absorption of a Sorbothane insole. Enabling you to move as you were meant to, even longer." Hope This Helps Peace And THE CREATOR BLESS! Always You & Your Husband & Baby and Children:)
