I am desperately out of shape and I work at an athletic club. The membership costs 87.13 per month (I'm going to try and score a discount with my boss), and it comes with free classes like:+step+pilates+yoga+spinning+water aerobics+body shapingand then I can use the pool, cardio, weight rooms, and tennis courts, etc. I can also get a discounted price on the classes that have fees. Does that seem like a good deal? The thing is, I've never been to a gym, I really don't know how to work out, or what I would do. I'm sure once I figured it out I would be fine...do you have any suggestions for a beginner, like as far as exercise is concerned? Plus, what kind of shoes should I get? (I was just thinking athletic shoes, but they have all sorts of different kinds like "cross trainers" (what are those?)So yeah, I guess that's really four questions in one...if you answer all of them (the best) I'll pick your answer as the best answer Smile

i would if you can get a good discount, i would think that you could have it free or at least half price....regular tennis shoes are fine...and i would take pilates (it's hard but relaxing, if that makes any sense), body shaping (it will tone you up all over), and step (it will be a challenge at first, but it is so much fun and it's good cardio)

The simple answer is yes, unless you have a health reason not to.I wish I had that opportunity. Don't spend to much when you start, you first need to understand if the experienec is for you. Do not commit when you start.Try it first, once you find you like it, say after a few months (3) then spend money on the gear.Enjoy!!!

I'm really surprised that you don't get a free membership for working there. I pay $57 a month for a family membership and I get all of that. Since you are out of shape, it's important to start slow and realize that it's really hard at first. It will be easier and more fun further down the road. I would work on the basics and focus on large muscle groups. 3 to 4 times a week for an hour or more. Do some cardio, strength training, and stretching (flexibility). Swimming, elliptical, bike, treadmill, water aerobicsStrength training on machines (focus large muscle groups)Pilates (stretching and toning) or Yoga or bothMix it up to keep from getting bored and so you aren't using the same muscles each time, save wear and tearGive time to repair, day of rest, can do some light cardio though

Join! You will feel better, sleep better and have more energy once you start working out. The first thing to do is talk to one of the trainers there and have them show you how all of the equipment works and work with them to set up a training regimine for you and evaluate your diet too. I would start out slow use weight that is not forcing you to strain. Remember to train not strain. You should alternate workouts, i fyou are using weights use light weight, but do high repititions to burn fat and develop a cardio routine, stair step, aerobics, treadmill, exercise bikes whatever you enjoy. The most important thing to do is alternate your routines and use different equipment, simply doing the same exercises over and over will get your body used to that exercise and you'll get in a rut. Foods and drinks loaded with sugars and fats need to be weeded out. Increase eating fruits and vegetables as snacks instead of candy bars and junk foods, drink plenty of water, vitamin water is great and way better for you than soda and has all kinds of decent flavors. Shoe wise...I personally love Nike Shox, they have great arch support and cushion your knees. There are tons of girlish styles and they are comfortable for running, jogging etc. Just go to a finish line or ladies foot locker and find a shoe that is light, comfortable, doesn't slide up and down on your ankle and gives your foot support. Under armour and Nike have dri-fit socks which will pull the moisture away from your feet, they are great for athletics and fit really well. The price seems fair if those classes are included, I belong to Gold's and it's like $50.00 a month, but I have to pay extra for classes. I would join the place u work at u can start training with a coworker and keep each other motivated plus u r already there and wont have that "it's too far to go to the other gym I belong to routine"!!! No excuses to not work out when u r already there!Good Luck and keep up the pump!!!
