| Since September, I have adopted a vigorous workout program (4-5 times a week, elliptical for 30 min at 7.5 mph and recumbent bike for 30 min, heart rate on both usually btwn 180 and 195) and have been eating a lot healthier than before. My clothes feel a bit looser and everyone tells me I am looking skinnier, but I have not lost a single pound!Am I working out TOO hard? Am I failing to lose weight and just building muscle I don't really want? I really want to lose about 20 pounds and I am discouraged that my months of exercise and diet are not working....Do I need to stay at a certain heart rate to lose fat/weight? Does having too high a heart rate during exercise impede weight loss?Also, I do the elliptical and bike each at a resistance of 5...do I need to do these machines at lower resistance do lose weight and burn fat as opposed to just turning fat into muscle? I really want to burn some fat/pounds, not just gain muscle! |

| Sounds like you're gaining muscle weight while you're losing fat weight. Muscle weighs more than fat, so it's pretty common to see when people lift weights or start out a new workout program. If you're losing inches, but not pounds, that's actually better than losing a lot of weight quickly. If you build more muscle, your body will metabolize food more efficiently, burn fat more efficiently, and you'll be able to lose weight (from fat) more efficiently. If you are lifting weights during your workout, you could replace that with other cardio workouts to help lose the fat weight without gaining as much muscle weight.If you keep up with the cardio workouts and diet like you are doing, you should notice that you're losing weight. |

| muscle weight weighs more than fat. Muscle is a good thing to have because it helps your body burn fat (thats why guys can eat a freakin pizza and not gain a pound haha) So muscle weight is a good thing, just don't bulk up! Cardio is the best workout to burn calories but not gain big ol muscles! So keep it up! |

| Muscle weight is heaver than fat weight. Fat is bulkier than muscle. You are building muscle and losing the fat, That is a good thing. you might try and do a little less on your workouts, maybe you will start to louse total weight then. Keep up with the healthy eating and smaller portions at meal time and a little less vigorous workouts and you should see the weight start to come off. |

| Fat is burned at a lower hear-rate. Instead of such a vigorous pace, try and easier pace where you can talk to someone without gasping for breath, but you are still sweating. Also, up the time from 30 to 45 minutes or even an hour at this pace. Give yourself a couple days of rest in there so you don't burn out. |

| Basically you're losing fat and gaining muscle, this is a good thing! If you're really attached to the idea of losing scale weight rather than just looking better, drop your calorie intake. Generally "looking fit" has to do more with having a low bodyfat % rather than a low body weight.
