My husband just got a Meyer's Parrot. We usually give him his love and exercise at night after we have crated our 2 chihuahuas for the night. A friend of my husband's at work says that her birds play with her Pekingese all the time. This sounds great , but I afraid to even try it. I was just wondering if anyone here has birds and dogs who are buddies and if so ,how did you find out that they would make good buddies without anyone getting hurt? Thanks a bunch!

It depends on the personality of your dogs. I have three dogs, but only one of them can be in the room when my birds are out playing. He will not hurt them, but the others will. My mom has a Chihuahua and she never tried to hurt my Blue-Fronted Amazon when I took him to her house. She was actually afraid of him. You might try holding the dogs up to the cage and see how they act, then go from there. My bird and dog were not raised together.

I have two cockatiels, a budgie, and two finches. If I'm taking any of them out of the cage I make sure none of the animals are around. It's just not a good idea. We had 5 finches but the cats ate the two little girls and the daddy finch died recently. Now we have the mom and son left. The only way you could take a bird out with another type of pet is if they were raised together and you know they won't hurt each other. For the sake and safety of your parrot, DO NOT DO IT! If it doesn't work out, you may lose your bird.If you do do it though... Introduce them safely and slowly and leave your bird's wings unclipped so it can get away if it needs to. Good luck.

I have had my birds for 11yrs (Citron Cockatoo) and 9yrs (Green Cheek Conure) I have always had dogs. My birds have an open cage policy and are always allowed to go in and out of their cages as they please. I can't say that my dogs and birds are friends as the birds think that they are a higher lifeforms than the other mere pets in the house and the dogs view the birds as feathered 3 year olds. They except that they live there and find them mildly annoying but have accepted them as part of the home. All of the parrot people that I know also have other pets. All but one of them own dogs. All of that being said... You have to be the one to make the final decision. Do you feel that you have enough control ove your dogs to handle the situation? If your dogs are well trained, you should have no issues as a few well placed corrections should let the dogs know that the bird is 100% off limits. IF you do not have the necessary control then I suggest that you get the pups into training class so that you can learn to communicate with them better. It would make your parrot much happier in the long run if it could be out of its cage whenever you are home and not just after the pooches are put away.Good luck to you and congrats on your new bird!~Tyed~

No, or else it will fly all over the place and you won't be able to catch it.
