|
|
Hi. I'm a 22-year-old bloke, 5'10", about 13 stone (about 180 pounds I think).I want to improve the capabilties of my muscles all-over but am not worried about my looks, just my fitness. I cannot afford gym membership or even my own weights. I have an old backpack. The other day I filled it with a bag of sand weighing 16KG (about 35 pounds I think) and went for a hard walk, on roads, wearing my tracksuit and running shoes. It was about 3-4 miles. Is this good exercise, and what's it helping me with? Also I stood on a box wearing the weighted backpack and squatted up and down, holding a can of beans straight out in each arm.Is what I am doing good? Thanks!

It should help certain muscles. As an amateur boxer, I sometimes walk around with weighted clothing.

I might worry that you could hurt your back, or put too much stress on your joints by having something throwing off your balance (backpack). The boxer who wears weighted clothes.. probably has a more evenly distributed load which would not be as harmful.

It can do a lot of damage to your back. Start off light, then slowly add weight. Keep your posture straight. Also, I do not recommend running with it on - keep a mediocre pace. There are better ways of improving muscles, but if your careful, this way should be sufficient.

Lose the backpack and go for a run. Other than getting you an honorable mention on the bulletin board at the Ministry of Silly Walks, its not really doing anything for you.

Yes, its a good thing to carry around extra weight when exercising you'll burn more calories. The backpack idea is good. Ankle and arm weights are good. I wouldnt recommend walking with dumbbells that are heavier than 1 pound because you might injure you wrists.

There is no need for the weights. Walking for 30-45 minutes is good enough for your fitness. The weights can put unnecessary strain on your muscles or you may throw you off balance to really injure yourself.

you will injure your spine. Why can't you afford weights? I got myself dumbbells, they are really cheap, and they are fantastic! I saw results in 2 weeks. They cost me about 5 dollars each (I got two). These were brand new. Look at garage sales, and second shop stores, and maybe eBay, you can find them even cheaper. Then find exercises for dumbbells on-line and do them.
