My friend is 23 years old, 6' 3" tall and overweight, he weighs 28 stone, and has been overweight for the best part of ten years; his weight seems to have gone up during that time; he was already 18 stone when he was 15 years old. As it is, he gets short of breath if he tries to run up steps or if he does any heavy manual labour. How long until he causes some serious health risks for himself and what is his life expectancy?

I don't really know what "stone" means but 28 stone is obviously not good! I have the same problem with a friend of mine, but I am a girl.. I usually just walk around my apartment in a sports bra and shorts talking about how fat and out of shape I am in front of her (but i'm not at all!) It is so hard to tell someone that they are harming themselves. He probably already has health problems but just does not realize it yet. In the next few years they will get a little worse, and if he continues on, he will probably develop diabetes and have heart problems. The best way to get this person moving is to tell him you wanted to join a gym and you wanted a friend to go with you.. maybe he would like to have someone motivate him.

i cant tell what his life expectancy is...but overweight people have a risk of having diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and even heart attack.

Being a person who has struggled with weight problems most of my life, I can tell you that you can talk to him until you're blue in the face about his weight, but he's not going to do anything about it until he's ready to do something about it. There could be a lot of issues behind his weight, first and foremost is he depressed? Depressed people often lack motivation and often eat as a source of comfort. It then turns into a vicious cycle. What problems can he have from weight? There are many: Diabetes, Cancer, heart diesease, liver problems, just to name a few. He also has a greater chance of having a stroke. The best thing you can do is encourge activities that keep him active that you can do together. Even if it's only going on nature walks or tossing a frisbee, at least you know he's getting that much exercise.
