I always find myself at the gym walking around the machines wondering what I should do first and last. Usually I would just go in, run on the treadmills a little and then do the chest press things for 1-3 minutes then go home. I was just wondering if there's a different routine that would be more effective that I should be doing. I heard that I should lift weights first before doing cardio but I just want to make sure if that's what I should do.

At a generic exercise place like 24 Hour Fitness, they should have the machines selected so you can go through them and work a complete range of body parts.I would look outside the gym and pick-up Sly Moves from Sylvester Stallone in the bargain basement of Amazon. It has a full range of general exercises, health practices - what I think you really need - inspiration!!! Good Luck. It's really a mental thing. 24 Hour Fitness is a terrible gym chain here in California. I would recommend going to a gym where people take training seriously. Real people are always more helpful than wannabes...just ask for help.

definately lift before you do cardio. As a trainer i see a lot of people blasting out on the cycle or treadmill then hitting weight and its the total reverse.Focus on a max of 2 muscle groups each day you go, for e.g.monday:Biceps - bar curl, hammer curl, preacher curllegs - leg press, squats, hack squats20-30min cardio (bike/treadmill/row) whatever suitsyou should follow that pattern and keep it consistent you can train the one muscle group more then once a week if theres something you want to focus on but give it atleast a 2 day break for that particular muscle group especially if its a large muscle group such as legs, chest, back.I have plenty of ideas tips and workouts on my blog http://myfitmate.blogspot.com/ feel free to have a look for some ideas.keep it up good luck

My advice is this:Work the core muscle groups before doing the extremities. If your arms are tired from bicep and tricep exercise, you will not be able to do chest and back muscles safely or effectively.Only do 2 set of any exercise. There was a comprehensive study done in Europe over the course of a few years. They found that doing a third set of a specific exercise only increased muscles growth by 5% more than doing two sets (due to muscle fatigue). I would rather use that same time to choose another exercise or maybe move to a different muscles group. The idea of 2 days off before working a muscle group again is good. I've found that 3 days off works better for me.And eat lots of good foods, that's critical!
