Just bought an older centurian bike and am new to cycling. When shifting (my shifters are not indexed) my chain gets stuck sometimes between the two front grears. Another problem I am having is I cannot shift to my smallest front gear.... any suggestions on how I can fix either of these?

You have to keep pedalling forwards when you change gear on a Derailleur gear bike otherwise the chain will end up all over the place.

Your 2 problems are probably related. It sounds like you need to adjust your front derailleurs low limit and or loosen your shifter cable. What's happening is your chain isn't being moved far enough to catch your small chain ring and is riding between the rings until it gets stuck. Look at the site posted by Mr G for detailed info. Once you understand how the drive-train works adjustments are not that hard.

LOL Mr G. He is right giving you a doggy bearded link. It's already there and why duplicate the explanation.
