so as my new years resolution, i am becoming a vegetarian. mainly because i dont really like meat, and after becoming aware of animal cruelty and all the nasty truths involved, the idea of meat grosses me out. im also not eating eggs, but i will be eating milk and cheese. anywho, just out of curiosity, should this encourage some significant weight loss? im currently 140 and 5'4 so im not exactly grotesque but not really happy with my body. I know not to like binge out on crap like chips and soda and what not, and i dont expect the weight to fly off, but can i expect to lose weight?

Yes you will loose weight. Be careful of the milk and cheese because they contain a lot of fat.

You won't lose any weight. You'll end up replacing the meat proteins with carbohydrates.

Yes you will lose weight. Meat is very fattening. Just make sure you don't replace it with junk foods like chips and candy or else you might gain weight. If you really wanted to lose weight you could try going vegan. That way you aren't allowed to eat any kinds of meat, or animal by products, so you can only eat fruits, veggies and grains. I dropped about 7 pounds in my first week doing it. It's really healthy, but it takes a lot of willpower, so maybe once you get used to being a vegetarian you could try being vegan. Either way you should lose weight and be healthier. Good luck!

I lost weight when I first went vegetarian because I was rarely eating dairy and never ate eggs, but after I started to eat dairy again I gained the weight back due to the high fat in dairy products, and I started eating a lot more carbs as fillers. Also be careful to get enough protein! The scale might drop as you are losing weight but it could be a lot of muscle mass lost because you are not eating enough protein to support it. This is common with a vegetarian diet and not a good and healthy way to lose weight. Try searching for high protein vegan and vegetarian diets and get a really good idea of what kind of proteins you can have instead of meat before you go vegetarian, that way the weight you are losing is healthy weight. Also a note on cheese: Look up some info on Rennet, it will make you careful about what cheese you eat.

By becoming a vegetarian, you probably will realize a weight loss, over time. However, some folks do actually gain weight when they make the change to vegetarianism. It all depends on the foods you eat, particularly when you substitute for the lack of meat. If you find low-fat, low-carb protein sources, you should lose weight. Many people load up on cheese, fatty nuts, and other high-protein foods that are also high-fat. Also, carbohydrates totally pack on the weight. Simply becoming vegetarian does not lead to weight loss. Smart food choices do. Good luck to you! By the way, did you know the difference between a vegan and a vegetarian? I wrote an article about this on Helium. (See SOURCE link).

Yes. Over time, but be careful. Do research to make sure you're getting the right nutrients, especially vitamin B12 (you only get it from meat). And make sure to get enough protein.Good luck and Congratulations!! =]

Yes, it should make you loose weight. I have been a vegetarian for half a year now, and i have had massive wait loss. Just be careful with how much soy [if you eat soy] you eat because there is a LOT of estragen in it, and estragen will make you gain wait. Also, dont try to not eat a lot so you wont gain wait. One of the best ways to loose wait is to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. just dont go over calories, and equal out the meals. have low fat yogurt, or maybe a fruit for breakfast. and eat healthy. it should help.
