Yoga helps more with flexibility and pilates helps a bit more with toning up. Within the first 2-3 weeks

Pilates increases strength, flexibility and endurance. It also improves posture, alignment, co-ordination and balance without bulking up your muscles. In Pilates, nothing is forced. You emphasize correct form rather than going for the burn. Pilates. There are two ways to practice Pilates , You can join a mat-based group class where you'll do specialized calisthenics exercises, or you can take private lessons on a series of specially designed machines with exotic names such as the Cadillac and the Reformer. Whether you take the mat class or use the machines, all Pilates moves are designed to work your powerhouse muscles — abs, lower back, thighs, and buttocks — and to gently lengthen them. The result is a body that is properly aligned and at less risk for injury. Not to mention, practicing such exercises on a regular basis can help you move more freely and gracefully. You can see results after just 2 weeks.Yoga, is basically breathing with exercises (Pranayama & Asana's) increasing fleixibility, mobility, body toning using both static and flowing movements, improves balance, posture, stress levels via breathing and inner serenity.Yoga has a greater effect on the mind, it helps to balance and release tension. You could try a combination of both and see which one works best for you.

I had the same question once. I had back surgery (car reck) and needed to exercise after resting 6 mts. I looked into all the different exercises, then asked my back surgeon and he said yoga was the best and that I should stay away from pilates. Yoga will improve your back the most.
