| I'm not fat and I do some exercise but I struggle to commit to exercise when work gets busy or when I get bored. I have no exercise buddy at the mo and I'm a social animal really. I have about a year to get fit enough to carry a 15-20kg pack up and downhill for 12-14 hours!!! Help????Matt G, do you know what condition I am actually in??? You’re exactly the kind of person who gives the climbing and mountaineering fraternity a bad name. I’m 37 years old and neither stupid or childish! I have a lot of friends who mountaineer and manage to be civil with their advice. I know I HAVE to be fit and cardiovascularly healthy… I was looking for some constructive training programme advice. PS here’s a GROWN UP suggestion…try to find out a bit more about people before you get all judgemental and OFFENSIVE!Thanks to everyone else for the suggestions. I'm looking for some details really.... best types of exercise, frequency, duration, diet etc. tit-bits about the mountain from people who have done it etc. I used to climb regularly but have not found a new climbing partner since I moved to new zealand so suggestions of how to meet FRIENDLY like minded people would also be good! |

| The only way to prepare for this is to do it. I don't necessarily mean the trip you are going on, but you should strap on a 25 kilo pack and just do some local hikes around your area. Start with a relatively flat 5k hike or so, and slowly work your way up to steeper and steeper terrain. I have been back packing for years and with all the different mussels combinations used taken into consideration, no gym will REALLY prepare you. It is best to take with you the equipment with you that you will actually be using, as this allows you to break it in. Especially your boots. I recommend you use a two sock system. Polly-pro liners will wick away moisture and a good pair of Marino wool socks will rub against the liner and not your foot preventing blisters. they are great cushion and insulation as well (even wet!) | Out4Acti... said most of it. Chillin' with others on minor peaks, bouldering, is another. Mine is weekend speleologybut the rotten rock climbs would just ruin all your pretty gear; guano stains ain't fashionable, y'know. |

| Sorry. But please don't try in your condition. You have to be very fit and cardiovascular healthy. Running at least 5 miles a day, and biking 20 also. Upper body too. Just grow up first, then ask the real questions kid!! |

| 25 kilos. Are you going to be bringing weights up with you? Seriously, if that was a guess at how much your bag's going to weigh you're way off. It's be more around the 10-15k mark and that's if you're carrying your boots and some gear or a rope and possibly parts of a tent. Get out there and do some running. Get a couple of ankle weights to prepare your feet for the weight of a pair of boots if you can't get out and do some hikes and hill walks. |
