| It is a vitamin supplement - B-vitamin group, it:-Aids in normal cell growth.-Provides support for normal protein metabolism.-Provides dietary support for healthy hair and nails. One of the family of B-vitamins, biotin is an important player in energy metabolism and the production of various enzymes. Named after the Greek root word “bios” which signifies life, biotin is produced by the bacteria that live in the lower-most part of our intestines - the colon. It is still uncertain whether the body can absorb and use this form of biotin. Biotin is also readily found in our food supply and deficiency is rare, although certain medications and other nutrients can interfere with cellular uptake. Healthy intake of this important B-vitamin helps prevent birth defects, may be extremely important for diabetics, and also determines hair and nail health. How Does Biotin Work?Besides assisting all B-vitamins in the breakdown of the foods we eat into a useable energy source for our bodies, glucose, biotin is also important for other aspects of a healthy body. Nail and hair health depend on a healthy intake of biotin, and deficiency is readily noticeable in dry, lackluster hair and brittle, weak nails, although increasing biotin intake to an optimal level can improve hair and nail health. A Swiss study revealed that adequate biotin intake can increase nail thickness by 25% after just 6 months of supplementation in those that were previously deficient in the nutrient. Hair loss may also be stopped or slowed with adequate biotin intake, although it won’t help if the hair loss is due to other factors besides biotin deficiency. New research is slowly revealing a link between high doses of biotin and improved insulin response in diabetics, helping blood sugar levels to become normal. Preliminary studies are foreseeing that biotin may help in 3 ways: 1 - Biotin supports enzymes that are involved in fatty acid synthesis, theoretically helping the body use glucose to synthesize fats, thus lowering blood levels of glucose.2 - Biotin stimulates a liver enzyme, called glucokinase, which is involved in converting glucose into the storage form called glycogen, which also gets the glucose out of the blood. 3 - In animal studies, biotin has been shown to increase insulin secretion, which is the hormone that carries glucose out of the blood.Biotin also plays an important role in pregnancy – helping in the development of the fetus. Most people have heard of the importance of folic acid supplementation during pregnancy to ward of neural tube defects, but recent research is showing that biotin is also extremely important in fetal development. Biotin breaks down more rapidly during pregnancy than at any other time, meaning that it is used up quickly and may be required in higher than normal quantities to sustain pregnancy health. Animal studies have linked biotin deficiency to birth defects, although this effect has not been tested in humans. The best method of prevention in this case is to simply ensure that you’re taking a multivitamin that supplies at least 30 mcg of biotin and 400-800 mcg of folic acid during pregnancy, such as with a B-complex vitamin or pre-natal vitamins. Remember, it is always important that you check with your doctor before you start a new supplement program, especially if you are already pregnant or may become pregnant.Food sources of biotin include: barley, cauliflower, egg yolk, legumes, liver, nuts, oatmeal, rice, soy, whole wheat and yeast. Since such a small amount is needed for normal body function, and biotin is readily found in the foods we eat, deficiency is extremely rare. |
