I'd get a gym membership instead - it will only cost $30 per month a decent elliptical or treadmill is thousands of dollars. A gym will be more beneficial to you b/c you can take classes and cross train on many different machines and lift weights. You won't get bored as easily!

Treadmill machines are created for performing functions such as walking, jogging, or running, as well as simulated hill climbing. Exercising on a treadmill is a great way to burn calories, build bone density, maintain good cardiovascular health, and increase your energy level. Of course, if you engage in a less intense workout, you will have to increase the length of your workouts to get the most benefits.Elliptical trainers allow the athlete to burn a similar number of calories as jogging...but without the risk of injury to the back, knees, hips, or ankles. Your feet never leave the pedals. As a result, this type of machine is quite low-impact and goes easy on the joints. Elliptical motion machines ALSO simultaneously work the upper body (unlike the treadmill, which works only the lower body)! As the feet go through their elliptical motion, the hands grip the moving handlebars, exercising the arms.Being elliptical more complete and low impact, i'd go for that. Don't worry about your fitness level, start slow and move up from there.

I think an elliptical machine is way harder than a treadmill!! I've been working out for several years, at home and at a gym;I'm fit (running and lifting weights); never been overweight but I can't even go 10 minutes on the elliptical LOL If you are a beginner I would suggest the treadmill- you can start slow and build up your endurance as time goes on.

This is a personal decision for me, but I would choose an elliptical. Ellipticals tend to have a lower impact rate then treadmills which would be good for you since you're not as athletic. And for me, Ellipticals seem to be more fun and interesting. Part of getting in shape is sticking with it. So your workout has to be as fun as it can be. For me, treadmills are boring and I cant motivate myself to stick with it. I always hit the elliptical when I go to the gym though. I can get a good full body workout and my body isn't hurting after. If you are considering what kind of treadmill or elliptical to get, I recommend going to www.whenrunninginplace.com. They take all the reviews from the different online reviewers and come up with an average score/rating for the different ellipticals and treadmills. You can also see side by side comparisons for all the different models. You should check it out if you are looking for a treadmill or elliptical.I hope this helps... good luck!
