| I'm not too familiar with Pilates. Do you get good results doing a DVD or should you go to a class? Any good DVDs that could be recommended? My husband's chiropracter strongly urged him to do either yoga or pilates for his bad back. We are hoping to begin doing one of those together. Do men go to the classes? What does Pilates involve? Thanks so much! |

| Videos and DVD's tend to be made for general populations and include either excessively generic exercises or ridiculously complex exercises. I suggest you go to a pilates studio or a gym where the class is taught. If your husbands' back is bad my personal recommendation would be for him to go to Pilates before Yoga. The major difference between pilates and Yoga is in body positioning. Most Pilates classes are taught on the floor and you are usually lying on your back or stomach. In Yoga you do floor work where you are on your back and stomach, bent over, standing up, rotating at the waist and balancing. These exercises can exacerbate any pre-existing conditions and could discourage him from continuing. Men tend to go to Yoga classes more than pilates but professional golfers and other sport professionals are learning to appreciate the flexibility training and core strengthening (abs)elements of Pilates. I had a groin pull a few years back that was accompanied by lower back pain and pilates gave me my flexibility back so I could continue to train. Good Luck |
