|

This is a somewhat embarrassing question, but heck, thankfully it's all anonymous here, so I'm going to ask. My husband is 300 lbs we want to get a treadmill to get back into shape. We live in a newish (1994) construction house and I was wondering if it would be safe to put the treadmill (which is heavy in itself) on the second floor of the house and have him jog on it? I just have visions of him falling through the floor. Our basement is cold and I know we wouldn't use the treadmill if we put it down there. Thanks.

I love you for asking this question..its so funny...I think it will be safe, unless the structural make up of your building is crappy, it should hold, and the more he runs, the less he'll weigh so good luck!

He should be okay but it may vibrate quite a bit. If you were not living below, I would say it is a bad idea, simply from the noise, possible vibrations, etc. Good news is that as long as you're hearing that "noise" he is trying to make himself a better person. Go for it.

Haha, there's no reason to worry. If your floor can't take your husband and a treadmill, how could it take him on a couch with a television nearby? Seriously, don't worry - floors are strong - especially on the upper levels.

Save your money, don't buy the treadmill and have him climb up and down the stairs for exercise.

Yes it will be safe.Technically, he is only 100 lbs more than the average guy. If you have a 200 lb treadmill with a 200 lb guy running on it, your husband would only represent a 25% increase. Furthermore, the 200 lb guy will probably be running harder than your husband and pounding the treads with close to the same force as a heavier person running at a lighter pace. If you really concerned about it, position the treadmill perpendicular to the direction of the floor joists instead of parallel so that it crosses more joists and spreads the weight more

how bout putting it down stairs?if you cant, i would make sure its ontop of one of the rafters you can generally feel weather its a hollow area by knocking on the floor.

I would also check the weight allowed on the treadmill itself...

No there won't be a problem, besides getting the darn thing up the stairs. However, the treadmill itself has alot of weight to it, as does your husband. therefore, you could take a piece of plywood or osb (orientated strand board) one-half inch in thickness and place it under the treadmill to evenly distribute the wieght. hence, giving it a larger footprint. This will definetely insure that a Wile E. Coyote incident will not occur. Also, you're probaly thinking that a peice of osb is going to be mighty unatttractive. right you are Ken, place a peice of indoor/outdoor carpet over it and tack it in place. A million things you could do to make it more pleasing to the eye. Good luck,
