| I have an exercise bike with independently moving handlebars for an upper-body workout as well as lower, but I can't use them easily because I'm only 5'1". I want to know first of all how accurate the calorie counter is on my bike, and how many calories less would I be burning if I'm only pedaling and not using the handlebars. I am just starting to exercise, so I only cycle for 20 minutes at a time on the lowest resistance. The display says I'm going 20mph. How many calories am I burning? And how many more calories could I burn if I increased the resistance? |

| Hi therethe calorie counter on the bike will be based upon an average of the population. If the bike allows you to tel it your age, sex and level of activity it will be slightly more accurate. For it to be even more accurate it will need to know the intensity of the workout, the duration of the workout and how fast you are cycling. If as you say, you are only using the lowest setting at a speed of 20 mph and only cycling with the legs you are probably bu ring something close to 4kcal per min. So for 20 mins it is likely that you will burn 80 kcals. If you upped the intensity you could easily burn 6 kcal per min and therefore 120 kcals.A very intense workout will burn 10 kcals per min and this is where you will see rapid progress in weight loss if that is your goals. My advice is to maintain the intensity that you are comfortable with and gradually increase it over time and when you are ready.Hope this helps http://homecalisthenics.blogspot.com/ http://www.youtube.com/homecalisthenics |
