They seem the same but people advocate the as different forms of exercise. How do they differ? Are they suitable for different people? I need to tone up and regain flexibility, would yoga or pilates be the better choice?

Depends on the style of Yoga. Yoga ranges from gentle techniques designed to increase flexibility and relaxation, to intense sessions designed to build muscle tone and develop strength.Pilate's carries with it a number of safety risks that personal trainers often do not discuss because they are not aware, or do not understand, and does not often provide statistically important changes in health.

personally i think they are very much the same it's only the experts that will demand they are differentAny form of exercise will tone you up and regain flexibility these type though also calm and can give a sense of well being mentally they are both relaxing to do maybe you could do a taster in each to see which one you like best good luck xEdit i personally liked yoga because you can start with gentle stretching ect when your new and then build up the movements each week you soon see the difference

Yoga is better for flexibility.. but its more about meditation and spiritual things. Pilates is definantly better for toning though!

Yoga is older than pilates, and it's bigger also than pilates! It's for your entire body shape. You'll be more flexible and enter in peace of mind/body/spirit. Pilates targets special spots in your body. It has some similar benefits as yoga. But, in general yes they have different points.I advice you to go with yoga, as you have more exercises choices and benefits. You can start by this free yoga e-course: http://www.yoga-health-beauty-energy.com/Peace

As someone who is just starting to keep fit I would say pilates. I am doing both along with other types of exercise, though I am just beginning. My boyfriend is very much into keeping fit and has always been big on exercise. He would say pilates as it centres on the core and would help with most other forms of exercise rather than yoga. A lot of sporting clubs are now using core exercises in their training, which is mainly pilates. I have found yoga is great to relax, but have found myself nearly falling alseep, becasue I get too relaxed. I feel better in my body after pilates and after a lesson I notice a difference in my way I hold my body and it has helped me whilst do other types of exercise. Why not try both and see how they work?

Well I do both, but I am a faithful yoga practitioner and yoga is the best you can do for flexibility and it tones your body too. Vinyasa yoga is the best for you.
