Definitely doing something wrong. The elliptical is meant to take strain off your knees. Do you keep you feet flat on the machine? There is not need to lift and put pressure on your knees when the machine works with your body ergonomically.

they are just soar. have you been doing anything different to them lately such as cracking them? or have you been carrying anything heavier than you normally do? that could be it.

I had the same problem. You are creating movement by using too much knee pressure. Over time it will cause problems. Instead try creating movement by shifting hips and weight side to side. Just as effective for cardio but will save your knees!

Decrease the level and see what happens. You might be pushing too hard or straining something.

I did the same thing, but in a little different way as the above poster. I was pumping with the upper part of my quadriceps instead of sliding using my whole leg. Some ellipticals are better/easier to use and don't encourage this type of motion. I find the Precor models to be the best. However, sometimes a cheaper model that is well maintained than some of the Precors that cost more but poorly maintained.Another thing you can try is to raise/lower the incline and resistance. I had trouble on certain inclines and resistance levels. For example, a lot of resistance on lower inclines hurt me worse than any other setting.

You should stretch before exercising, otherwise you may strain your muscles.
