I dont have the financial stability to get a gym membership. So i like to do any at home workouts. When i was younger i used to go on 2 hour long walks, and that kept me in shape. Now I'm about 20-30 lbs overweight and want to look good again. My brother said to start drinking muscle milk and do lots of cardio and push ups and sit ups, but i read that that will just make me bulk up...which is not what i want, at all. Any suggestions??

It's actually really hard for women to bulk up. You'd have to be lifting high amounts of weights to actually bulk up; it's a common fear for women, but it's pretty hard to do unless you have an extremely thick, athletic body type or are taking specific creatine supplements, etc. I would suggest doing cardio, pushups, situps, and the like, just as you had first suggested. There are a lot of videos on youtube that show you how to use what you have at home to work out. Also, there are websites like sparkpeople.com (it's free. There're other sites too, but that's the one I use cuz its easy and free) that help you set up a workout plan without having a gym. There's no need to take muscle milk as it is usually for trying to gain muscle rather than lose fat, so just stick to a healthy eating plan of 1200-1500 calories a day. Good luck on your weight loss!

drink TONS of water. Potatoes and carrots are fattening. Do some of those video excersises on TV. Weigh yourself everyday with one of those digital scales that say like 140.3 so that even though you lose .1 pound, you know you lost something and that'll keep you motivated. Get a buddy and have an excersise date. Just eat healthy and in the right portions. Well, hope i helped. Good luck!!! Smile

Here are a few tips:1. You MUST exercise if you want to lose weight and keep it off, so do something every day, even if it’s just a 15-minute walk around the neighborhood. Don’t say you don’t have time for exercise; you have to MAKE time. Yes, it takes time and effort, but you’re worth it, right?2. Walk as much as you want, but don’t do cardio for more than 40 minutes at a time. If you do, you risk burning muscle instead of fat.3. If you do strength training, use light weights and do lots of repetitions. That’ll really help you “tone up.”4. Your diet will make you or break you. You have probably learned bad eating habits over time (most people do). That’s not your fault, but now you have to deal with it. Make a commitment to yourself to unlearn those bad habits and re-learn better habits.5. Eat breakfast every day within an hour of getting up. It kick-starts your metabolism. Studies have shown that people who skip breakfast are 450% more likely to be overweight than those who eat breakfast every day.6. Eat six small meals or snacks per day instead of three squares per day or one big meal per day. If you eat too much at one sitting, your body stores the extra calories as fat. Go too long between meals and your metabolism slows down. Your body expends energy digesting your food, so eating smaller portions more often keeps your metabolism running high because you’re constantly digesting food.7. Avoid these as much as possible:-- Trans fat (any type of partially or fully hydrogenated oil)-- High fructose corn syrup (soft drinks are LOADED with it)-- Fast food-- Junk food-- White sugar, white flour, white rice, white potatoes-- The deadly C’s (cookies, cakes, candy, chips, cola)8. Build your diet around these trim-body-friendly foods:-- Nuts, any kind (almonds are best)-- Beans/Legumes-- Fresh vegetables (green is GREAT!!!)-- Dairy products (as long as they’re low-fat or non-fat)-- Eggs-- Lean meats (fish and poultry top the list)-- Olive oil-- Whole grain breads/cereals/pasta-- Fresh fruits (anything that ends in “berry” is a winner)-- Tea (green tea or black pekoe tea)-- Cold water or ice water (your body has to expend extra calories to heat it up)9. Desserts and treats are the exception, not the rule. Having said that, however, (1) you can have a couple of pieces of chocolate every day – just don’t overdo, and (2) Allow yourself one “cheat meal” every week where you eat and drink whatever you want as long as you don’t gorge yourself. That’ll help keep you from feeling deprived and it’ll make it easier to stick with your new healthy eating plan.Good luck!“The three great essentials to achieve anything worthwhile are first, hard work; second, stick-to-itiveness; third, common sense.”-- Thomas Alva Edison, inventor extraordinaire

I agree with sarge. Also, remember that female hormones may cause weight gain. Eat some kelp or seaweed as this puts thrust behind the thyroid and kicks the metabolism up a notch. it's also good for hormones. there are some amino acids that can contribute to your "cut" look, once you start exercising. to avoid sounding like a chemistry book, just buy some non-sugared, non-fructose WHEY and make a smoothy with soy milk and frozen blueberries in the blender for your mid-day snack. Breakfast is very important. Please remember that a little protein with every meal, esp. breakfast, can help you keep stabilized and keep from overeating, or grabbing the first thing in sight. It is so important to make good choices in food right now. Stock up on some snack and quick meal ideas to make sure that you are not eating just anything. MY favorite mini-meals are beans and rice, kale, boiled chicken, whole grains - such as oats, kasha, and quinoa - oranges and bananas and blueberries, honey on plain yogurt, and dates. You have to find what works for you and then stick to it until you see results.
