|
I'm 15 (Male) and I am interested in taking up cycling as a hobby (intense hobby). What gear do I need? I have a bike, but it's a Trek 820 Mountain Bike, and I live in Chicago, so it's kind of heavy and slow for roads. I'm interested in a bike that's under $1000, but can go on roads/trails/etc. What should I get? Also, what other gear do I need to take up bicycling? Thanks! Also, I'm 6 feet tall (1.83 m), and 170 lbs (77 kg)

The kind of bike you buy depends on what you fit best on; go to bike shops, have them professionally fit you, do some test rides, and see what you like best. A true road bike doesn't do off-road rides, so look for a hybrid/fitness type bike with wider tires. As for other gear, the only essential is a helmet. But, if you want to really ride a lot, you need bike shorts, bike jerseys, shoes, clipless pedals, a high-end saddle, and of course, water bottles. Oh, and then there is the little bag to carry your extra tube or patch kit, tire levers, C02 cartridges, cell phone, emergency money, ID, etc.

To be a bicyclist, all you need is a bicycle. It's nice to have lots of other things as well but it's nice to gather these as you need them. The only things you would need to have are - a couple of spare inner tubes to fit your bike. It's easier to swop a tube than to try and repair it. A pump or other device to inflate the tyres. Probably a multi tool - in case something comes loose and perhaps a chain tool and spare chain links. It might be nice to have a saddle pouch in order to be able to carry them. You'll find it a huge advantage to have some cycle specific clothing. Decide what you like and what you need and buy it when you can afford it.As for a bike, I don't know what is available to you over there (in the land of dreams) so I can't comment. Have you tried road (slick) tyres (tires) on the Trek?My personal choice would be a hard tail with a lockout on the front suspension forks.Wishing you the best of luck and enjoyment on the road of discovery that you are setting out on.

You can get a basic road bike for under $1000, probably made of aluminum. You definitely should have a helmet. Biking gloves would be a good idea and some cycling shoes.
