Another example of the wonders of a “free market” economy. As long as the dollar drives the media, we seem to need celebrity and excitement to drive the commentators. No long, boring? elucidations of facts and policy positions; rather sound bytes geared to the short attention spans of the media conditioned masses. In an era when it’s become more and more difficult to actually find the story behind the story, there are far too few Americans with the motivation and energy to delve deeply enough to reach the basic facts of any of the important issues that face us this election cycle. And we were taught by John Kerry among others that too much explanation doesn’t sell nearly as well as a catchy slogan or two. Karl Rove’s genius was the harnessing of the brief attention span of the average American to the advantage of the current administration; all the while doing their best to make sure that there is no improvement in attention span, curiosity or general education.

You're forgetting that if you argument were completely true, you yourself would be unable to write your question. Obviously some people see behind the curtain that is the media.By the way, I really enjoyed "This is Spinal Tap."

The dumbing down of the American audience has been great for the neo-conservative movement in the last 2 decades, but I have a feeling many of them are waking up and smelling the stale economy that has been the result of mismanaged policies and phony talking points.

Can I help hold your soapbox for you?Everybody knows the media plays a role in politics and elections. Fortunately I think the American public is actually smarter than they are sometimes given credit for (especially by Republicans).

Yours is a good question, so you probably won't get too many answers. The only other option is government control of the media. I'm a Liberal and against this "fairness doctrine" scam. Let people raise the money and say whatever they want. Having speech/thought police is not the American way.

I don't believe the Media played a lot in this election. The Clintons Bill and Hillary showed their true colors and people are seeing that. So if anyone messed the election up it would be the Clintons themselves.

All John Kerry did for me was confuse me on where he stood on the issues. What we need is more people like Newt Gingrich who:1. understand the problems facing America2. have a solid, comprehensive plan to address the problmes3. are able to clearly communicate to the American people what the problems are, how to solve them, and what the consequences are in the future if we don't address them.As far as the mainstream media, I agree with you on having to find the story behind the story and Americans not being motivated enough to delve into the issues. If they were more motivated to do so they would realize how absolutely insane the "globull warming" hoax is and how disastrous their legislation is to "fixing" it.

I know all too well how the media manipulates elections and dumbs down teh issues.I was a Ron Paul supporter.I have sense learned to look to the internet for my news - it allws me to fast forward the Paris Hilton and Britney Spears tabliod garbage that is now Fox and CNN.I look to foreign news too - they seem to get the same stories we get but 2 weeks earlier.

No matter how glamourous the news reader they are the puppet told what to read and so we are like sheep taking in everything they say as gospel. These media companies are owned by people who rub shoulders with those at the top so influence is always there.

You're using this medium so you get it but you don't know it. This is the first blogisphere election. The major media is being dominated by blogs to the point that they acknowledge and discuss the talking points on this board.the Internet is truly "participatory Democracy" in a high-tech world. Barrack Obama has been on the cutting edge on this "change" in the body politic. By using the Internet a candidate can control his message to his followers through e-mails. he can control his fund raising efforts through the same means. He can even fight smears and lies in the blogisphere the same way. From this point on, all elections will be waged and won in this manner. The national news media people will become increasingly irrelevant; like the evening news and the daily newspaper. Does anyone remember when Walter Cronkite was God?
