| Hi, I am a runner and normally run 3-4 times a week, as I am training for a 10 mile race. However I've had knee problems for a while and now my physio has said I have to rest it for 2 weeks, so no running at all. He has suggested I cycle instead. Now I realise that anything that gets your heart pumping is going to help with fitness/weight loss/training etc, but is running more effective than cycling. It is only because when I run, I sweat more and feel as if I've worked harder than if I cycle. I normally run between 4-8 miles each time but am considering an 10-12 mile bike ride tonight. Would I burn more cals/fat from the bike ride? |

| I love the gym and i prefer to run also. Cycling is a great work out and since i started i have noticed that my running has improved. It works different muscles in your legs and made me feel stronger when i ran. I cycle to give my knee a break. Cycling burns lot of calories, just push the tension up once and a while and try and find a place with hill. Good luck i hope this helps |

| Probably the same amount...I still think runnings always the best workout (and swimming) But i would highly suggest "pool running" if youve heard of it. I was a runner (till i got injured) and i was told to stop for 3 weeks and during that time (to prepare for a race) i called the local PT place and asked about aqua therepy and its like they hook you to a pool harness and you just run in the water (in place)...no strain on your knees...and jeeze that was the best workout of my life! and it was only like 30 mins.good luck with the knees...and yea i think a 10 to 12 mile ride would burn as much as a 4-8 run. |

| Speeds will differ but for the same relative pace i.e. moderate running/moderate cycling or fast running/fast cycling then an hours running would burn more calories than an hours cycling. To burn the same cals you need to cycle for longer. As one person has pointed out cycling uses different muscles which is good for general fitness but for running specific training not so good. The best way to train for running is to run.You should also be aware that depending on the degree of effort cycling can also put a lot of strain on your knees. A lot of hill climbing and push and pull on the pedals should be avoided. Don't know what the cause of the knee problems are but I used to suffer a lot of knee pain until I started taking Glucosamine and Chondroitin tablets. |
