| I am doing the three day breast cancer walk. We will be walking 60 miles within three days. I often have trouble with shin splints when I walk. I have not started the training process yet. Also are there any types of shoes that help with this problem? |

| Yes, shoes can help. Go find some shoes that are right for your feet and support them. I find that when I wear shoes that are tight near my toes I get shin splints pretty bad. Also if you train on a treadmill, you may get shin splints like I do. It is better to train outside. If the winter weather where you live forces you to train on a treadmill, turn down the incline. Ice your feet also if you are feeling pain. Streching 15 minutes before and after also helps. Best of luck. |

| There are 2 types, the front part of the leg or the side of the shins. I am not sure which one you have, but shinsplints has many causes. being heavy and out of shape, weak muscles, bad shoes, bio mechanical problems, doing too much too soon with exercise. You can do calf raises off of the stairs to strengthen the calf muscle. For the front part, stand against the wall. place your feet out away from the wall. lift your toes up as high as you can off the ground and then return. warm up before you walk, maybe march in place. stretch after wards. treatment can be placing your shins in cold water for 20 minutes. Cross trainer shoes will work well for you or walking shoes. I like Nike Monarque shoes. Very cushioning shoe. You must start by walking a short distance every day to build yourself up. Too much too fast can result in shin splints. Unfortunately, the miles you are going to put out is way too much for most people to handle. You may not be able to ward of the splints! I hope this helps you. |
