I like to go for walks, but so do dog owners on the same sidewalk. Many of these dogs feel the need to nip and bite me. Fortunately, they have been small dogs and only once have they left any mark. But a lot of times, the larger dogs will lunge at me and the only thing seperating chucks of my flesh from the mouths of these beasts is the leash and an attentive owner. One day soon, i fear, i will not be so lucky. Are there any stylish or hide-able teeth-proof guards that I can wear? I presume such things have been invented to protect against snake bites. Or maybe not. But I can't wear high, uncomfortable leather boots when I am walking. And i will need protection at least to the knee, or even higher. Is a Tazer my only hope?

Confidence is the first key to prevent being bitten. Dogs can sense fear..Second I would sue the dog owners. Pretty soon you will be able to enjoy your walks without any problems whatsoever...

A big stick is the only answer...personally, when I walk w/my dog and see another person, I will tighten the leash of my dog. This should be common courtesy. Don't feel embarrassed. When I walk w/out my dog, I too carry a stick. I also yell at owners to chain their dogs up when they come-out.

I walk with a stick. Its just for protection in-case I have no choice but to defend. You would be surprised how many "mean" dogs will turn wimpy if you pound the base of the stick on the ground and yell at them to sit down. If all else fails and you get bit, don't be afraid of causing a scene. Confront the owners, call animal control if you must. You never know if the next person that dog bites may be a little kid.
