Swimming laps is great exercise. As with any sport, start slow and build your endurance up.

The water is causing resistance against your muscles causing you to loose weight. however it is less strenuous to you because the water is supporting you. I like this form of exercise. Here is a site that might give you a few more answers you were looking for : http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/maia3.htm

Easy: swimming will help you by burning more calories and by toning your muscles. A person who weighs, say, 130 pounds with good muscle tone will look smaller than someone who weighs 130 pounds but has smaller muscles and more fat because muscle tissue is denser (= more weight in less volume) than fat.Swimming will tone pretty much all of the muscles below your neck and above your ankles.Start with as much time in the pool (and at as fast a pace) as you can handle, and then build up from there. It will get easier over time. It's an excellent choice for weight loss. Congrats and good luck!
