Right now, running five miles would take me about 45 minutes. Sometimes I have trouble squeezing it into my already busy schedule. To lose weight more efficiently, would it make sense to run 2.5 miles in the morning and 2.5 miles at night or just 5 miles at once?

doing a standard run, you burn 100 calories a mile, and a standard jog, you also burn 100 a mile. Its probably best to jog 5.

It depends totally on you!Jogging 5 miles and jogging 2.5 miles are just about the same ... if you do them at the same intensity. While fat loss does happen during the running cycle, much of it comes afterwards. Research shows that when your body is still recovering from an intense cardio work out, you are burning fat, and the longer you are in this state the more fat you lose. Jogging at those speeds either way won't put you in that state for very long, so if you stick to jogging i would say to stay at 5 miles at once, it's probably less time (in terms of getting to where you go to run, and back, and showering etc.) However,..If you can run for 45 minutes at a sustained intensity at around 65-75% max HR, I would recommend you do interval training. Interval training is shown to help you lose more fat faster after your work out then just running or jogging because your body is recovering for a longer period of time than a 45 minute jog. And if its a time crunch for you, its defenitley the answer. Interval training takes anywhere from 18-25 minutes. Sometimes longer depending on the intervals you use and how long you go for. Basically its running at certain intensity levels for a certain amount of time. For example warm up for 7 minutes running at 70% Max HR. Then Run for 1 minute at 85% Then run at 1 minute at 75% max HR, 1min @ 90% max HR.... etc. There are few you can find online, or just make up your own. These small cardio workouts really boost cardiovascular fitness and weightloss. I could go into scientifically how this works but i wouldn't want to bore ya. Defenitley look into it though. Hope it helps!

For weight loss purposes you may want to reconsider what you are doing. I know a lot of people who jog mile after mile and get nowhere fast. What is normally recommended is to weight lift and then afterwards do some interval training. There are numerous sources about this on the internet. But to let you know how it works out I'll give you my example using weights and the bike. The weights portion is pretty standard stuff you can look up but I've tried two different types of bike work.1.) I tried distance and speed and it got me pretty much nowhere.2.) Interval training, 2 minutes warming up, 1 minute at full (like dying to breath) effort, 2 minutes at 75% full effort, repeat 3 times, 2 minutes cooling down.I've lost nearly 30 pounds in 2 months of doing this. Also to lose weight, consider your diet which is enormously important. Avoid breads and sugars (don't eliminate, just avoid them as a habit) and definitely get rid of anything that contains high fructose corn syrup.Once you've done the weights (even moderate weights), the interval training and got your diet straightened out you will see an enormous difference. Now I know it's the holidays and there is lots of yummy foods on the table (yikes, I gained like 2 lbs over Thanksgiving lol) but remember that while you should enjoy your holidays, try and remain disciplined during the rest of the year.Good luck and happy workouts.

Everything I have read says it is better to break your exercise time into 2 or 3 times instead of one. By exercising multiple times per day you keep your metabolism fired up and burn more calories than you would if you only fired your metabolism once per day.
