When a person weighs themselves after dieting, they see that they've lost say 10lbs. But they actually don't look that much better because most of that weight was shapely muscle.Why do people not realize the importance of decent exercise and eating enough protein to maintain muscle? Muscle speeds up the metabolism and stops your thighs and butt etc from looking saggy. I've seen people eating nothing but fruit and veg and they are thrilled with the weight loss...but then they wonder why the weight loss comes to a grinding halt and they feel weak and tired and are less toned....reD4luv - fruit and veg when dieting for fat loss are all good, so long as you do get enough protein and exercise too. There doesn't have to be a special "diet", as long as it's reasonably healthy (balanced) and at most = maintenance level of calories per day, you will lose fat (with exercise).Every diet out there rely one thing, that you are burning more calories than you consume.I've been consuming double cream with milk every day for the past year, and because I know about energy balance (with my body), I can gain weight, or lose it even while taking in "evil saturated fat"...as long as I'm burning off more than I take in. Obviously I lowered the calories for fat burning and upped the exercise volume to burn off more fat.: ) - I agree, it's all down to quick fix diets...which then get further distorted by the general public.Weight loss pills like Hydroxycut contain ingredients that speed up the central nervous system. This in turn helps your body to burn off more energy (calories). But the main active ingredient in them is caffeine (which you get from green tea and gaurana)..and you can get that from drinking black tea/coffee or taking caffeine pills like "pro-plus" (from Tesco). This seems all well and good until your body gets used to it (after just weeks), and then you're body gets dependant on it and "needs" it just to stay normally alert/active. Your system becomes run down/drained. Caffeine supplements should always be cycled to stop system drainage and dependence (e.g. 4 weeks on, 4 weeks off).But, they are only SUPLLEMENTING your diet and exercise, it is just a little booster. It can't make you lose fat if you are still eating too much or not exercising enough. I would only use supplements once you're near your ideal weight and need a boost. Personally, I don't take any, saves me lots!sugarbee - yep, variety is the spice of life...I acquired a lot of knowledge and rubbish about diet and fitness in my insecure days, luckily now, I am happier within myself...I really don't like the media. I'm looking forward to that day in the future! Smile

Hmm... Im all for the protein diet. I do like vegs and fruit, though... So what do you think is the "best" way to lose weight? I know I have to exercise more. I've been eating differently and boy do I feel sluggish.What do you think of weight loss pills like Hydroxycut, etc?

I ask myself this question all the time.I try to eat 100g of protein a day and do strength training 3 times a week, but I did used to be one of these girls obsessed with the number on the scale in my teens years. I thought if you lose weight that meant you lost fat. I did not know that perhaps half of my losses were just water and muscle loss and that my body fat percentage was not going down. So I think it's mostly due to lack of education on the matter, combined with this need people have for a quick fix and worrying about the consequences later on.

Because sadly Paul, we live in a society where people are judged not by their character, but instead by how they look.We are all as different as the varieties of flowers around us...but unfortunately, some people are not able to accept difference...therefore the pressure to conform.....by any means necessary.Even if it means putting one's health at risk by doing horrendous things with their diets. I agree that exercise and Proper eating is the key....and most of these fads that come and go and leave a lot of people with empty pocketbooks and hopelessness.One day soon in the near future, everybody will have perfect health and be just they way they were intended to be.
