outside is better because you're actually using more muscles to run. treadmills make it easier, you're still exercising but not at your body's full potential...since the treadmill is moving too.if you live close to a beach try running there, less impact on your feet, back, and knees!!

A lot of treadmills are made to have more a "give" so that it is better on your knees than running on pavement, or hard ground. On the other hand, it's more difficult for many people to run as long outside as on a treadmill because there are variables such as slight hills, rocky terrain, that type of thing. It strains a body to run outside slightly more than on a treadmill, and if you are running at the same speed you will inevitably burn more calories outside than in.

I think this depends on the individual, as there are pros and cons to both. Ideally, the exercise program that is going to be more beneficial is the one you are going to stick with.Personally, I prefer to run on my treadmill. It has a controlled enviornment, and I can safely run day or night no matter the weather. I have my DVR set up, and I watch my favorite shows while I run. The time goes fast and I get a great workout. I know others who can only run outside, though, as they feel the TM is too boring. If you want a great debate, post this same question on the boards at coolrunnings.com.No matter outdoors or on the TM, running is a great workout.

You have to run 3 miles on a treadmill in order to equal one mile outside. Unless, you make the treadmill at an incline of 2 (which is harder on you knees) Outside is hard due to uneven ground surface, wind resistance, air flow etc.
