i would like to get a dog but im not sure of what breed. i want a large breed something over 50 pounds. The dog would mainly be inside with a medium sized fenced yard out back. Im a junior in college soo i share the house with 3 other people. and 2 husky mixes and a rednose pitt. But sadly none of these dogs are mine so i cant take them with me alot. I would like to either get 1 from a breeder or a rescue if the dog is under a year. The dog would be thoroughly socialized and trained. It would also 1-2 hours are hard exercises a day. Ive also grown up with akitas and bull mastiff soo i know how to handle big strong willed breeds. And i have nothing against labs and goldens i just like other breeds better. I would also like to have a breed that isnt a push over and will defend itself or me if the situation ever arose, he would just be my friend and hiking buddy. So with that being said i would like to get yours opinions about which breed is best. And real reasons would be more appreciated the just 1 word answers.thnks

For your situation I'd go with a Pointer. They're loyal companions, larger dogs, and very protective. They require a lot of exercise though, so make sure they get the exercise they need. A Pointer is a good running companion and many people use them hunting and hiking. I used to have one, and he was like my best friend. Went with me everywhere, liked to go for long walks in the woods and was very social. I can't remember it off the top of my head, but if you go to a book store they have a whole book on the breed and you might find more information that would help you make a final decision.

well, any dog over 50 pounds thats a few months old, that you raise would most likely do that anyways.but if it had to be any kind, get a shepherd mix, or a doberman mix.any dog that is bonded enough with its owner will defend him/her if the situation arises.Shih Tzus are supposed to be the third most friendly breed.my dog, Cloe, she sleeps with me, when my dad wakes me up in the morning, she growls at him, and when he shakes me to wake me up, she bites him, hard. makes him bleed sometimes.so any dog that you actually bond with will totally do that. =Dgood luck!P.S, shelter dogs are the best. all the ones we got were really protective with mounds of energy

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are a great breed (though they only get to about 40 lbs) They love lots of exercise, are easily socialised and trained (they are very intelligent), they are definatly not pushovers! they will defend themselves if the situation ever arose. They are great with people (children included, they are commonly called the "nanny dog" because they are so great with kids) and good with other animals if socialised properly (some can be snappy though). They are very loyal and affectionate. They dont do well outside as they crave human attention, ones that are kept outside often get bored and agressive. They love to cuddle and are just great all round dogs Very Happy Do some research on this breed and I'm sure you will grow to love them as much as I do Smile

You are going to get all sort of answers as everyone has a fav dog breed.Given the other dogs in your household l would be careful of what l got as some breeds are not good with other dogs.Personally l love Dobermans and standard schnauzers which are highly intelligent and usually pre em pt their owners. The standard requires grooming so this may not be your choice but both breeds are very very protective of their owners and house.l would not get an adult as you have other dogs there and there must be a pecking order. If you wish to adopt a pup from a shelter that is up to you and unless you know its full history be aware it may have issues

I have a German Shepherd. I love him. He's a big baby, yet is absolutely fearless. My cats can share food with him, and my boyfriend can wrestle rough with him and he won't utter a sound. A stranger comes to the door...we definitely hear about it!! At 75 pounds at 10 months old...he's not tiny! But he's been a joy to be with and a breeze to train. He's getting his CGC title this weekend! He's calm in the house, knows that outdoors is for running and being crazy. He is intensly loyal. So much so that when he goes out to do his business he will make it as quick as possible as to get back inside with his people. He never leaves my side. I have a relatively small place and he will follow me from room to room and lay at my feet. I rarely need to leash him because he won't wander more than 15 feet away from me, then he stops to look back. He doesn't question my leadership. Ever. What I say goes. When my boyfriend gives him a command, Brasky will look at me first to confirm it. Yet when I'm gone he understands that my boyfriend is in charge. I can do pretty much anything with this dog. Look at his teeth, clip his nails, clean his ears, pull his tail, put my hands in his food dish, brush him from top to bottom, pull hair, and he will not utter a complaint. If I tell him to leave something, he leaves it. He is truely the greatest dog I've ever owned. It's also a quality of the GSD breed. I wouldn't have any other breed.

How about a good ol' fashioned mutt! (or you could be really fancy and call him or her a hybrid!)Mutts really are the "perfect breed" in a way. They have very few health problems and come in all shapes, colors and sizes! In my experiences my mixed breed dogs have all been intelligent, sweet, and loving dogs! Loyal to a T! My dog Rocco was my body guard when I went horseback ridding and never let any suspicious men or other animals approach me. He would bark if someone got to close, and protected my horse from strange and aggressive dogs. He was a Shepard mix.Pix! http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b133/Storm-Wolf/rocko.jpgLook in a rescue or shelter and bring a Heinz 57 (that's what my father called mutts of unknown breeds) into your home! You won't regret it!

Well I first thought a Neapolitan Mastiff but they're not very active and don't like a lot of exercise, some exercise is good but a lot can cause heat stroke and over exertion, they're not particularly atheletic. It sounds to me like you would prefer a more atheletic dog. I'm bias but I LOVE Azawakh. They are difficult to control, they need a lot of exercise, but their temperament is cat-like, sharp, and severe. They're not really cuddle worthy, some are, some aren't. I think a Doberman Pinscher would be good, they are atheletic, dominant, not a push over, they really sound good for you. German Shepherds are also like this.If you don't like that idea how about something a little different. It sounds like you like less common breeds, not really rare, just not the most common breeds out there. If this is true how about a Rhodesian Ridgeback. They are protective, beautiful, not extremely energetic but not couch potatoes, they are independent so they will be fine if left alone while you're in school, they would love 1-2 hours of daily exercise, they are definitely not push overs. They really seem to fit everything that you wanted, so if I were you, I'd go with a: Rhodesian Ridgeback.

Since you have already lived in a house with a Pit, why don't you take a strong look at them. They sturdy, healthy dogs and more importantly, they are the hardest to get adopted due to the negative astigmatism attached to them. They are so easy to train because their desire to please their humans is so strong. Grooming costs are minimal because of their short coat and shed very little. Well, this is just my opinion.

Im not trying to be rude so please dont be offended.... but this is the 6th or 7th time you have asked this exact question (maybe only 5th, still too much). I get it: you want a dog and you are unsure and need other's opinions. Regardless, its ultimately up to you. If you are this unsure about what breed and can't decide based on all the answers you've already received then you should not be getting a dog. Please look into what you want by researching it.
