|
|
| i would like to either get a Australian Cattle Dog or american pittbull terrier. The dog would mainly be inside with a medium sized fenced yard out back. Im a junior in college soo i share the house with 3 other people. and 2 husky mixes and a rednose pitt. But sadly none of these dogs are mine so i cant take them with me alot. I would like to either get 1 from a breeder or a rescue if the dog is under a year. The dog would be thoroughly socialized and trained. It would also 1-2 hours are hard exercises a day. Ive also grown up with akitas and bull mastiff soo i know how to handle big strong willed breeds. And i have nothing against labs and goldens i just like these breeds better. I would also not be getting the dog as a guard dog, he would just be my friend and hiking buddy. So with that being said i would like to get yours opinions about which breed is best. And real reasons would be more appreciated the just 1 word answers.thnks also if any other breeds come to mine let me know |

| Honestly I'd go with the Pit, Australian Cattle dogs really need more of a job to do, and are really hard to keep entertained 24 hours a day. Pits are generally more relaxed about life. As you said, be sure to make sure the dog is extremely well socialized with dogs, and has zero history of dog aggression, especially living with three other large adult dogs. |

With so many dogs already in a yard why don't you just ask their owners if you can take them out for walks and look after the ones you have there already. The uncertainty of living in a group house situation is not a great environment to bring yet another dog into.. Just a surrogate parent to the dogs that are there already i am sure their owners won't mind - if anything it could be a welcomed help for them with their dogs.If not the Aussie Cattle Dogs are great but will need lots of exercise and stimulation - great for agility and obedience work. Also you need to make sure that the other dogs will welcome yet another into the pack. |

| pittbulls were bred to be loyal, while australian cattle dogs were bred as working dogs.I'm afraid that even with the 1-2 hour a day hard exercise, it still wouldn't be enough 'play time' for such an energetic breed. |

| Well, I have a Blue Heeler which is a type of Australian Cattle Dog. He is the smartest dog I have ever had, and he is so easy, easy to train. He so wants to be a GOOD dog all the time. I've also had a Pit Bull. He was a sweetheart in the family - so loving, but he wasn't so great around other dogs. So, considering your living situation, I would recommend the Australian Cattle Dog. |

| I would go with an Australian cattle dog. However it would be really important to get one from a really reputable breeder to be sure it has a stable tempermant as Cattle dogs can be abit narotic. I compete in agility and obedience and from what I've seen, a well trained well raised cattle dog is a joy to be around. They are intelligent, athletic, quiet, very loyal, and love to play a good game of tug or fetch. They need an occasional brush and would make the perfect dog for hiking trips.Heres an example of a really good ACD breeder.. http://www.reddenblu.com/. |

| as OhlDoDol said, I suggest getting a pit. Aussies are very smart, but like most herding breeds, they need constant attenion and something to keep them interested. One of the best things for those breeds to do, is get a job, like herding, search and rescue, or agility. Pitbulls are much more relaxed and will be a better dog for the other 22 hours. |

| What about a boxer? Big strong dog with great personalties that the average person isn't going to be terrified of (I know that its unjust but people are scared of pit bull terriers there is no way around it). A lot can happen in 12 years of owning a dog and the people you meet may be more excepting of a different breed. With that said its your choice and there are so many pitts that need rescued. |

| You have an interesting choice here. I had an Australian Cattle Dog and we still have a Pit/Shar-Pei mix. I have owned several dogs in my lifetime and I have to say my Taz was the best of them all.Cow dogs are amazing. He was with me before the hubby and kids. They can be good family dogs but he always stayed my boy. He was protective and always alert. He lived for the tennis ball and would have loved to play Frisbee but could never manage to catch it. He knew several different commands on and off leash and knew the difference between lots of toys. He loved to eat (a little too much sometimes) and his bad vice- he wanted to use cats as live squeak toys. He developed cancer at 10 1/2 yrs old. He was a trooper up to the very end. (I love you my Tazzy Pooter Ramus!)There are special dogs of every breed and most of us on here have a story. If you want an intelligent, faithful, energetic companion who will be your very best friend, the Australian Cattle Dog would be the choice. Best of luck to you in whatever breed you choose. It sounds like you will be a great dog owner. |
